Ivar FlexibilityDenaThe Ivar side unit is a comfortable height for managing book and magazine storage. It comes packed as a long slender box and was relatively easy to put together. The weight is quite light but the side unit is very sturdy.5
Ivar2026EstherThe new IVAR comes in more compact packaging but requires more assembly. My pieces did not align perfectly, but I still could put the shelves together and load the shelves in my storage room. I like that I can take the shelf apart and connect it to existing ivars elsewhere in my house.4
Easy Construction & SturdyAaronHaving these come disassembled is great because it makes staining or painting the parts much easier. Assembly takes about 3 minutes if you know how to use a hammer or any other blunt object. Start by aligning the slots at one and any work your way day gradually rather than trying to do them all at the same time. 5
IVAR is RUINEDCourtneyI read the reviews, I was prepared to put the side unit together. But the pieces are no longer solid pine. The uprights, the shelves, the cross bars on the uprights -- every piece is finger jointed every few inches. So there's no consistent grain, and it's visually very unappealing. I assume they did this because previous unassembled versions mentioned warped uprights. IKEA, please, go back to the original design, with pre-assembled side units! PLEASE!1
GoodGarrettI built three of them and connected them together, then stained them darker brown with no problems.5
Works just fine, assembly is no funHolgerLiked the pre-assembled version better since it was cheaper and you could see what you buy. At times the solid wood parts are not pretty, but there's no way noticing this when all is wrapper up.4
Horrible change! Can't assemble. Will be returning.JulieOh my gosh, Ikea. I have LOVED my IVAR shelving system for years and years, and was so excited to move to a new space where I could add a little short Ivar that was going to be my bookshelf for cookbooks. That dream is dead because the side pieces are now IMPOSSIBLE TO ASSEMBLE. I'm the Ikea assembler in the house, there is no assembly that has beaten me to this date...UNTIL NOW. The dowels just do not go into the holes! And then you'd think they would manufacture the side pieces so you didn't have to see the dowl holes from one side but they give you two of the exact same pieces so one side of the post will always show your dowel holes, there is no hiding them. This was an awful change, Ikea. I'm going to be returning this purchase and i will need to dream up a new bookshelf idea (not from Ikea) for my cookbooks.1
Doesn’t come assembled anymore :-(AmeliaThis used to come assembled when you bought it, but I purchased two more IVAR units to add to the one I already have, and was disappointed to learn that this portion no longer comes assembled. It was a real pain in the neck to put together and extremely loud to insert the wooden pegs. 3
I’m a fan!ChristopherIvar is affordable, versatile, and easy to assemble. I use it for shoes, bookcases, and pantry storage.5
I still like it, despite the changesMeI dunno, I didn't have as much trouble with this assembly as others seem to have had. Is it annoying that Ikea went the cheapo route and redesigned these? Yes, yes it is. But it's still a great design and versatile and good-looking, so I can live with it.4
Faulty hole matchingAstorI've loved the IVAR series for almost a decade at this point. Specifically, I loved how easy it was to set up. With the new side units now needing to be assembled, this has gone sharply downhill. Not a single dowel hole matched when assembled, which meant I needed to redrill the dowel holes to match. Friction fit of the pieces was also too tight, with over half needing significant hammering. The dowels themselves are also unsightly and a downgrade from the old pre-assembled units. This is, quite frankly, unacceptable quality 'control'. I urge IKEA to either fix their issues or go back to selling these pre-assembled.2
Wow. You have to assemble the side panels?LisaThis is incredibly disappointing. I guess 'll have to buy the shelves I want and stick with what I have. The price keeps going up and yet now you have to assemble the side panels yourself? Ikea, I hope you change your mind on this one.3
Not "inexpensive." CHEAP! NEVER AGAIN!EllenIkea, you have ruined this side unit! I've assembled a lot of IKEA furniture in my lifetime, with happy results. I've spent thousands of dollars on IVAR and you can find it throughout my and my parents' homes, but after POUNDING pegs into holes for ONE side unit this week to expand a set of shelves, NEVER AGAIN will I buy "assemble yourself" IVAR side units. I'd rather pay more money somewhere else for a better product. The joy of IVAR used to be that it was vastly portable and EASY to set up. NOT ANY MORE! And DON'T tell me that I can "pay someone else" to do it. If I'm going to be spending more money, I'm getting a different product! Very disappointed! And NO, I'm not returning this, because it matches what I have, but I've learned my lesson first hand. BUYER BEWARE! I can still hear my ears ringing from banging on the pegs two days ago!1
Here's a fix: Use a C-clampMelanieBased on newer reviews here, I was nervous about assembling the side units. I did some research online prior to purchasing and stumbled upon a youtuber who recommended using a mallet, *more force* (haha!), and the use of a c- clamp. I was inspired. Trying to avoid the *more force* route entirely, I decided to use a c-clamp to drive all the wooden dowels in... and IT WORKED. I used a hammer, as instructed, at first, and then used a c-clamp to insert all the dowels. It was easy, silent, quick. I also used paint stirring sticks for protect the wood as I was adding pressure with the c-clamp. Hope this helps someone.4
Used as a rackCarolRather than pay an exobitant amount for a blanket or towel rack, I sanded smooth and painted white to lean in my bathroom for towels and mats. It would also work great for throws or blankets.4
Found a workaround!AllisonFor those of you who also struggled to assemble this, I found a decent solution to getting the pins into the holes with more ease: get a 6mm flathead (or any flathead that just fits into the hole). Twist it around while gently pushing down, until the screwdriver connects with the bottom of the hole. Keep twisting it to make the hole slightly bigger. Then hammer in the pin! It was a MUCH better solution to get these totally flush than the pins I tried to hammer in without digging to the holes. I also used some wood glue on the connecting parts for extra sturdiness.
Ikea, please bring back the older pre-assembled model. I’m used to having to put in a little muscle when assembling your furniture, but the increased cost for less convenience is not equal in any capacity. I would pay more for these if the quality control was better.3
NOT assembled!DeniseI was absolutely in shock when I received this in pieces that I had to assemble. There was nothing I recall seeing in the catalog description indicating this new change. They are incredibly difficult to put together. In fact of the 4 I bought, I only assembled 1 before giving up. They are no longer my "go to" shelving units.1
What happened with quality control?AnonymousIKEA is our go-to for furniture, but this piece is just not made right. Even with hammering in the cross braces for the side pieces until they are perfectly flush, you can clearly visualize how the hold that the peg is supposed to go through is not in alignment with the hole in the leg of the side piece. We have pegs sticking out everywhere. Hint if you're still going to buy it--you have to hit it with a heavy hammer, not a mallet. The heavier the better. Put a carpet underneath it or you'll wreck your floor. Oh and the flimsy cross braces that need to be attached? No pilot holes that we could see, so get a good drill driver for those.3
