Improving your home with curtains and blinds

Your choice of window solution is a great way to add beauty and expression to your home. But curtains and blinds can actually serve many more purposes – and usually more than one at a time.

Let's get lost in layers!

Measure the window for curtain rails, curtain rods or blinds

Knowing the right measurements for your window is important for creating window solutions. Because there is no one size fits all for curtains, it is key to fit the correct window decoration to every window.

Measuring the windows correctly is half the work.

The following five measurements will make it easier for you to create the solution that you need or before seeking assistance in IKEA store.

  1. Measure the height of your window frame. Add 10 cm. on the top to get the right positionof your curtain rod, rail or blind.
  2.  Measure the width of your window. Add at least 10 cm. on each side to get the right width of your curtain rod or rail. To pull your curtains or panel curtains back further, addmore.
  3. Measure the inner width of your window frame when mounting blinds inside the frame. This is to make sure the blinds cover the complete window.
  4. Measure the inner height of your window frame to know what length you’ll need on your blinds.
  5. Measure the height of the wall if you want a floor-to-ceiling window treatment. Subtract 5-10 cm. from the actual height to give space for the curtain rod or rail.

Tip: Prepare your measurements using our curtain measurement guide before coming to the store helps you get the right amount of fabric needed.

How to plan for your curtains

Step 1: Decide on ceiling-mounted or wall-mounted

Take a good look at your window, its opening and if there is a window sill, plants or furniture placement to take into account.

Step 2: Calculate the number of brackets

The rule of thumb for a stable rod or rail:

  • Use 2 brackets for curtain rods or rails up to 140 cm.
  • Use 3 brackets for curtain rods or rails between 140 and 280 cm.
  • Use 4 brackets for curtain rods or tracks longer than 280 cm.

How to choose your curtains

When selecting curtains, consider the atmosphere you want to create and the amount of light you need. Fabrics, textures, and colours can dramatically impact your room’s style, while also affecting privacy and light control. Choose materials that complement your interior design and offer the right balance of privacy and light filtering.

How to choose your blinds

Blinds offer great flexibility for controlling light and privacy while enhancing your home’s style. When choosing blinds, consider factors like material, durability, and adjustability. Our range includes everything from block-out roller blinds to adjustable panel curtains, giving you both safety and control over light and privacy.

At IKEA, product safety is our top priority.

Exposed cords on window blinds can pose a risk to young children, which is why all our window blinds are designed without loose or dangling cords.

Top-down bottom-up blinds

Top-down bottom-up blinds offer flexible light control and privacy. You can lower the top for natural light while keeping the bottom closed for privacy, or raise the bottom for an unobstructed view. Ideal for any room, they provide a versatile solution for both light and privacy needs.
