Equality starts at home
In the month we celebrate women, IKEA Portugal reinforces its commitment to the Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality (CIG), to support victims of domestic violence. In addition to the helpline for victims of domestic violence, we have strengthened the empowerment fund for victims of domestic violence, aimed at women who are temporarily housed in Shelter Houses of the CIG network, and who have the security conditions to resume their lives and start over in their own housing, but do not have the capital to ensure the initial rents.

We all have the right to a safe home
Home. It’s more than a roof and some walls. It’s our sanctuary where we thrive, where our potential is realized and released. But, for the roofless we see, and the millions we don’t, a home isn’t just a dream but a hope, a want, and a need.
A growing problem affecting over 1.6 billion. The unseen, hidden, and made to feel invisible. The refugees leaving everything behind thousands of miles away. The women who don’t feel safe at home. The youths kicked out for being true to themselves. The sofa surfers, shelter seekers, back of car sleepers.
At IKEA we believe a better home creates better everyday life. So together lets take action to make it so, for everyone struggling with unaffordable, inadequate or unsafe homes. Let’s enable those experiencing social exclusion to realize their potential. Let’s fulfil their hopes, dreams and desires of a home to call their own. Let’s support more people around us in moving forwards, from somewhere temporary to a permanent home.
Because everybody has a right to a home.
National support network for victims of domestic violence. How are we supporting?
Having a safe home is everyone's right. In collaboration with the Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality and within the framework of the Pact against Violence, IKEA has reinforced its support for the empowerment of women victims of domestic violence in this second year through the following actions:
- Financial support to ensure that the new permanent homes of victims of violence become welcoming, comfortable, and secure spaces;
- Direct access to job interviews conducted by the IKEA Portugal recruitment team.
- IKEA customer support line where victims of domestic violence can seek help, allowing them to contact the victim support hotline of the CIG.
We believe that by working with partners on the ground, we support more people around us so they can move forward, from a temporary space to a permanent home.
Concrete actions for a real problem
From access to decent housing to dating violence, and the challenges women face in balancing their sports careers with motherhood, the podcast "Igualmente" is now in its 4th season. Moderated by Cláudia Semedo, guests from various backgrounds and experiences engage with IKEA collaborators on topics related to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion.
I’m a victim. I know victims. Ask for help.
Violence against women is a serious human rights violation and a way of discrimination with impact not only on the victims but on society, as a whole. If you are a victim, ask for support. If you know someone who is going through this issue, please let the right people know about that.
