IKEA deliveries with electric vehicles

At IKEA, we have committed to cutting carbon emissions in all stages of our value chain.  As a result, Ingka Group – the biggest IKEA franchisee – is aiming for more than 90% of deliveries globally, to be delivered by electric vehicles (EV) or other IKEA zero-emission solutions by 2028.

The road ahead

To inspire the transition to electric deliveries, Ingka Group set an ambitious goal in 2018 to make 100% of its deliveries using electric vehicles by 2025. However, the journey toward achieving this goal has not been smooth.

Transitioning the infrastructure to support electric vehicles has not progressed as quickly as expected, and the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the availability of electric vehicles. We also faced challenges in remote locations, where the range of vehicles combined with the weight of our products slowed down progress.

As of September 2024, 41.1% of retail deliveries carried out by Ingka Group were made using electric vehicles, an increase from 24.6% the previous year.

To reflect the learnings and current progress, Ingka Group has revised its goal: now aiming to make over 90% of deliveries using electric vehicles by 2028.

This updated target will continue to drive ambition and momentum in this area, while being more achievable and realistic. We will always strive to exceed 90%, but the gap to 100% reflects uncertainties in customer deliveries, such as the lack of charging stations in remote areas or potential vehicle breakdowns that may require short-term replacement with a non-electric vehicle to ensure products are delivered to customers as promised.

IKEA electric vehicles deliveries, what’s our approach?

Our methodology for achieving electric deliveries involves:

Localisations

Identifying and adopting technologies and fuels suitable for the local infrastructure.

Collaborations

Collaborating closely with local authorities, partners, and communities to create an enabling environment for zero-emission logistics.

Reporting

Regularly monitoring and transparently reporting our progress to ensure accountability.

Reaching our IKEA emission reduction goals

Ingka Group is making significant progress globally towards achieving electric vehicles deliveries:

  • We have come a long way since we set the target in 2018. Already in 2019 Shanghai became the first city where 100% of our home deliveries are transported by EV vehicles and today we have 100% electric vehicles home deliveries across 20 cities, in 300+ locations and more than 2500+ electric vehicles are in operation globally.
  • Our latest forecast shows that we are making good progress towards the goal or reaching 100% zero emission deliveries, with some continued challenges. However, we expect significant progress to be made in 2024/2025 due to gains we have made within charging infrastructure in the last year, and new policies coming into place which allow for heavier electric light commercial vehicles in many countries.
  • We are working to more rapidly roll out zero emission vehicles through additional investments in vehicles and charging infrastructure, piloting new innovations and collaborating with other industry players. These actions include collaborating with truck manufacturers to test new EVs, investing in charging infrastructure, and advocating for policy changes to overcome regulatory barriers.
