The IKEA Concept
To create a better everyday life for the many people
The IKEA Concept starts with the idea of providing a range of home furnishing products that are affordable to the many people, not just the few. It is achieved by combining function, quality, design and value - always with sustainability in mind.
The IKEA Concept exists in every part of our company, from design, sourcing, packing and distributing through to our business model. Our aim is to help more people live a better life at home.
What does IKEA mean?
IK = Ingvar Kamprad, the initials of IKEA founder
EA = Elmtaryd and Agunnaryd, the name of the farm and village where he grew up
The IKEA logo has changed during the company’s history and the 1983 version remains a consistent symbol of the IKEA BUSINESS.
Ingvar Kamprad : The IKEA founder
Ingvar Feodor Kamprad was an enterprising young boy who founded IKEA when he was only 17 years old. He began the brand by selling replicas of his uncle Ernst’s kitchen table and slowly moved into other products. Though the company was mainly mail-order, it wasn’t long before IKEA took off and became a part of people’s homes across the world. Ingvar’s goal was always to help people live better while adding value and beauty to their lives.
IKEA has grown into a global retail and business leader. Ingvar Kamprad has been at the core of the IKEA success story from its very first store in Älmhult in 1953, to 403 stores in 49 countries today. We still believe like he did, that most things still remain to be done.
