Summer-friendly bedding for a new look

A bed is like a blank canvas, and with bedding, you can create the perfect masterpiece. Using colours and patterns, you can make an eye-catching change. How about the colour green to match the season? Not to forget the textiles that help you sleep cosier. Is your duvet light enough for the season? Are you comfortable with the pillow you use? Add textiles that you would like to feel against your skin. Linen, cotton - put them all together for summer-ready bedding.

A bit of nature inside your bedroom

“We wanted to add plants to our bedroom for their air purifying qualities,” says Cosima, who invited us to visit the apartment she shares with husband Mel where we worked together on this bedroom update. Aloe vera, snake plant, peace lily, spider plant and lavender are all plants that are believed to boost your sleep.

Lighting for a cosy ambience

Lighting can help create the mood and feel you want in your bedrooms. There are so many options, including the light on your bedside table. Add some wall lamps to direct light wherever you want in the room, clamp some on the bedhead, or maybe hang a couple of light cords low on either side of the bed.

We picked the hanging lights because they have a beautiful orange-yellow light you can dim right down. It’s nice to get into bed, dim the light and do our new nightly gratitude ritual, sharing what we’re grateful for that day.

Keep your bedside clear

What you keep by your bedside is important. Sometimes it is the last thing you see before you drift off. So why not make it nice? If part of your summer routine is to make your bedroom a no-digital zone, keep an alarm clock close by. Remember, all your bedside essentials should match your pre-sleep routine. Add those little things that are practical, pretty and personal.

Bring your personality into the room

Shelves are a great way to display your personal style. “We’re minimalists. We hung the shelves because we wanted to add a display that would bring personality to the room, but not too much!” says Cosima. Follow her lead and try turning the shelf brackets into a part of the display: “I turned one set of PERSHULT brackets upside down. It creates a K-shape. It’s a simple change that makes it a little more interesting.”

Curtains make all the difference

Swap those heavy winter drapes with light and colourful curtains that match the happy-go-lucky mood of the season. In summer mornings, there’s daylight earlier in your rooms than other times. So, keep your sleep pattern undisturbed by using curtains and blinds to control the light levels.
