A picture wall of inspiration and fond memories
A collage of photos or prints makes a wonderful gallery wall of pictures in your home. Grouped pictures look attractive when the different frames work well together. Picking the perfect set of frames to match your decor as well as the framed pictures is essential. Select frames from the same colour, pattern or style to complement each other. The easiest solution for a picture gallery is to use frames of the same design in different sizes. Frames with classic straight lines look elegant and let your pictures do the talking. Use your imagination and pick frame sizes and patterns for a joyful celebration of your favourite pictures.
Frames for every size, style, and need
IKEA sells an array of different frame styles, shapes, and colours. Some frames are more basic and are available in sizes from A6 (10.5 cm x 14.8 cm) all the way to A1 (59.4 cm x 84.1 cm). Others are fixed in size but are more ornately designed to compensate. This can contribute as much to the décor as the picture it displays.
Make sure to choose the colour and style of the frame based on where you want to use it.A tip is to use contrasting colours to accentuate and bring attention to your picture. For example, a black picture frame goes very well on a bright wall, while a white or silver frame does a good job of making your picture pop on a darker surface.
Lightweight and versatile frames
Lightweight picture frames are easier to hang. While heavier frames need fixing devices suitable to the wall type, lightweight frames do not need a screw or a nail to be wall-mounted. They can be easily hung using the ALFTA adhesive hook. Solid wood picture frames can sometimes be heavy and more challenging to hang. Instead, choose lightweight frames with a wooden finish to enjoy the beauty of a wood frame without the weight.
Matching the frame to the picture
A frame should complement and enhance the picture that it encloses. Ornate carved or embossed frames make a beautiful enclosure for old art prints and sepia photos. These frames are both decorative and functional. You can also match the style of frame to the furniture or decor in your room. Simple black or white frames are ideal for all kinds of pictures regardless of their colour or context.
Choosing interesting displays to frame
Frames can be used for more than pictures. A beautiful embroidery sampler, a leaf or even an old document are great framed conversation starters. Encase a beautiful leaf or pressed flower between the two clear sheets of the LERBODA frame. You can hang this distinctive metal frame with a decorative chain. It also comes with a standing display option.
A frame with a ledge can be used to display tiny souvenirs. A picture of your most memorable beach holiday comes alive when you display seashells, pebbles, or seaglass alongside the picture. Double-sided standing frames can easily display a menu or two of your favourite pictures in one reversible frame.
Understanding the different paper sizes
Understanding paper sizes is necessary when you want to frame your favourite print or photo. Paper is measured in metric ‘A sizes’, most commonly ranging from A9 (smallest) to A0 (largest). Every time the number decreases, the paper doubles in size. For example, A3 is two times larger than A4, and A4 is two times larger than A5, and so on.
Here’s a size guide, measured in centimetres:
A0 = 84.1 cm x 118.9 cm
A1 = 59.4 cm x 84.1 cm
A2 = 42.0 cm x 59.4 cm
A3 = 29.7 cm x 42.0 cm
A4 = 21.0 cm x 29.7 cm
A5 = 14.8 cm x 21.0 cm
A6 = 10.5 cm x 14.8 cm
A7 = 7.4 cm x 10.5 cm
A8 = 5.2 cm x 7.4 cm
A9 = 3.7 cm x 5.2 cm
When choosing a frame, the number one priority is that the frame is larger than the picture you want it to hold. Get the size as close as possible for a nice, tight frame. You can also go for a much larger one and add a picture mount to play around with the perspective.
Adjust the frame size with a picture mount
A picture mount is like a secondary frame, inside the frame. It’s a piece of paper or cardboard that sits between your picture and the glass of the frame. It’s used both for decoration and to prevent your photo from touching the glass.
Sometimes, a picture is of an in-between size or proportion that does not perfectly fit any frame. A picture mount allows you to easily frame such an image without having to trim or fold it. A picture mount is particularly striking when framing small prints in large picture frames. And this makes it easier for you to find a frame that fits since you can frame smaller pictures in larger frames.
Picture mounts are included with a lot of the frames we sell. But they can always be removed if you’d rather not use them. You’ll find all the information and measurements you need in each frame’s product description.
Easy to refresh picture frames
Life is not static and neither are our favourite pictures. When you get a picture professionally framed, you cannot always change the picture within the frame. Choose frames that have a clip or snap on function to refresh your picture display without using a screwdriver. Using a frame that can be hung both horizontally or vertically makes it even more versatile. When wall mounted frames have display stands, you can easily move a treasured wall-mounted picture to your desk.
Picture ledges for frame collections
Picture ledges are a very easy way to create a picture collage. Choose picture ledges that have a groove or a ledge to hold your picture frames in place. You can swap frames out and add a vase to the ledge without having to use fixing devices. Select a picture ledge to match the colour and design of the frames or your room decor.
Perspective and safety
Frames with clear front protection let your pictures shine through while also being safe and lightweight. Pictures protected with clear plastic in front are safer and lighter than those covered with glass. A PH-neutral frame will not discolour or otherwise affect your treasured photos and prints. Picture mounts also keep your picture out of direct contact with the front protection of the frame.
