The benefits of using a mattress protector
- Increases the life of the mattress: A mattress protector, as the name indicates, offers protection for your mattress from wear and tear.
- Protection from spills: A waterproof mattress protector protects the mattress from accidental spills, incontinence or a sweaty sleeper. This protection keeps your mattress clean despite use. By washing the mattress protector regularly, your bed stays fresh and hygienic.
- Protection from dust mites: A mattress protector protects the mattress from dust mites, bedbugs and other critters. Protection from dust mites is essential for those who are allergy-prone
- Allergen protection: A mattress protector also protects the mattress from dust, mould and mildew, thereby protecting you and your bed from allergens.
Selecting the right mattress protector
- Size: Ensure that the mattress protector that you buy is the right size for your mattress. This should include the length and breadth of your mattress and also its height for fitted mattress protectors.
- Type: A mattress protector that is zippered and covers the entire bed is more difficult to put on and take off. It is however, very secure. Mattress protectors that are fitted or have elastic are secure and will not get displaced easily during normal use. They are very easy to put on and take off for regular washing.
- Finish: A quilted mattress protector adds comfort and the quilting keeps the filling evenly distributed and spread out. Non-quilted covers are very smooth under the sheet and do not show creases. Select the one that suits your mattress best.
- Thread count: The thread count of a fabric is the number of horizontal and vertical threads that are present in one square inch of the fabric. Higher thread counts make fabric feel softer and silkier to the touch. So, buy the highest thread count that is available for the smoothest and most luxurious feel.
- Ease of maintenance: A mattress protector that is machine washable is easier to maintain and wash regularly. Higher temperature washes are best for optimum hygiene as washing at a temperature above 60°C kills dust mites.
- Materials used: The material used in the mattress protector determines how comfortable and breathable it will be during use. Cotton is breathable and soft, while polyester is durable and has water repellent qualities. Lyocell is cool to the touch and has excellent moisture-wicking properties. Most mattress protectors are made of a blend of materials to balance material properties.
- Waterproof: If you require protection from liquids for your mattress, ensure that your mattress protector is waterproof. A waterproof mattress protector should ideally go over the sides of the mattress as well as the top for optimal protection.
- Environmentally friendly: A mattress protector that is made from sustainably sourced materials is better for the environment.
Pillow cover and pillow protector
Your pillow is in contact with your face when you sleep. It absorbs all the dead skin cells, sweat and moisture produced through the night. Pillow covers protect your pillow from this buildup. Using a pillow protector in addition to a pillow cover also protects the pillow from dust mites. Wash your pillow cover and pillow protectors often to ensure that your face lies against a clean surface when you sleep.
