Mid-century modern style sofas
A mid-century modern (MCM) style sofa is inspired by sofas popular in the 1950s–60s. Characterised by clean lines, minimalist design and a low-profile. These sofas typically feature tapered wooden legs, slim arms and a structured back. They weren't bulky, so worked well in maintaining the open, airy and functional aesthetic of the time.
The style has seen a major resurgence due to its timeless appeal, with many choosing to pair vintage pieces (or vintage inspired) with modern interiors.
What does a mid-century modern sofa look like?
A mid-century style sofa will have some key design features:
- Lower profile frames with slim arms and a straight or slightly curved back
- Designed for compact spaces, balancing form and function without excess ornamentation
- Iconic tapered, splayed wooden (often teak) or metal legs that raise the sofa off the floor
- Ranges from neutral tones to bold, retro colours like olive green, mustard yellow, or teal
- Often upholstered in textured fabrics, leather, or velvet, sometimes featuring button tufting or channel stitching
