Reviews

Impractical to BuildAnonymous reviewerWhile the product itself was exactly what I was after, I probably would have looked elsewhere if I knew how difficult it would be to build. The screws were too big for the screw holes, the directions on which way to slide the screws once inserted were different across the parts, and the final configuration was too difficult with the backboard in place. In the end I had to position the cabinet in a way to hide the flaws of the build and the planks which weren't flush.2
Cube unitAnonymous reviewerLooks great, just don't forget ti put the back in. This is extremely difficult to rectify. Instruction are useless and pieces were hard to slot together2
Horrible to buildAnonymous reviewerThe instructions do not help with the last part of the build. Such a poor design and if not extremely careful you will snap one of the plastic fixings! Frustrating to say the least! 1
Awful to put together Anonymous reviewerExtremely difficult to put the last part on, flimsy once built2
poorly machined, mass market drossAnonymous reviewerAlmost every pre-made hole needed work to actually fit the pegs in, even then it was so poorly aligned the whole thing wasn't stable when completed. Never buying from Ikea again.1
TerribleAnonymous reviewerBy far the worst Ikea furniture I have ever bought. The single cubes are ok but anything bigger is a total disaster. I have built a lot of Ikea furniture over the years but these are terrible.2
Easy to assembleAnonymous reviewerIt is easy to assemble once you get the parts in order & start with the part which is labelled '1' on it. My husband struggled to start with but I had seen this advice on a review. Once advice followed took him just over 5mins.4
Easy to assemble and looks good.Anonymous reviewerEasy to assemble and looks good on the wall full of toys.5
Poor QualityAnonymous reviewerI don’t normally leave reviews but I had to after this. The actual design of this product is nice to see in person but is let down by drill holes not properly aligned, one was even flipped the wrong way around making it impossible to slot the piece on with the others. Whoever’s in charge of the quality assurance of this product needs to re-evaluate what they are doing.2
Eket Anonymous reviewerPiece at the back of compartment badly made and had to get a replacement 1
Great piece of furniture just follow the instructions!Anonymous reviewerI almost didn't buy these units after reading the reviews but I'm so glad I did. The units are so easy to assemble it took me around half an hour - just read the instructions and start with the correct piece! Great for storing vinyl records and a nice alternative to Kallax! 5
5 out of 6 were as expected, but the sixth was poorly made and required adjustmentAnonymous reviewerI bought 4 of these, having two already. 5 were perfect and easily constructed. The fourth was not accurately cut and the corners did not fit well. The finished product was barely adequate, and remained wobbly. It was made serviceable by bracing each corner with angled plates I bought elsewhere and attached myself. 4
Difficult to finish assembly Anonymous reviewerThe last piece to slot in is almost impossible, I bought 4 of these and each was just as difficult as the last. Would not recommend 2
DreadfulAnonymous reviewerDreadful piece of furniture, impossible to get the final few bits to slot in, and extremely flimsy when complete. Will try to return it, and switch for something else. Do not buy this. Terrible assembly process 1
Lovely piece of furniture but difficult to buildAnonymous reviewerI love the furniture itself, really nice piece in a lovely colour/wood finish, and I like that it’s a bit slimmer around the edges than Kallax, however as other people have commented, extremely difficult to build (and we normally have no issue with Ikea furniture). The theory/process is simple enough, but the pieces do NOT want to slot together, it was extremely stiff and we struggled even with two adults putting their whole body weight on each corner of the pieces that we were trying to fix together. We were jumping on it, hammering it, and still struggling, so prepare for a workout if you want this in your home! 4
Eket assembly Anonymous reviewerThe design looks fab but fitting them together is a nightmare. I am pretty good at assembling ikea flat pack furniture but this product line just doesn’t want to slot together properly. Kallax is far easier to assemble and so I will be returning the Eket items in exchange for Kallax 1
Excellent for VinylAnonymous reviewerThe instructions are pretty clear and it works if followed exactly in order. So not for idiots! It is just a shame that the original bases with legs are not available otherwise I would buy more to match. They were also sturdier than the current offering5
Absolute junkAnonymous reviewerAwful piece of garbage. Poor quality materials, terrible instructions a complete waste of time and money. Avoid at all costs....mine is now out with the rubbish. A chunk of my life I will never get back1
DisappointedAnonymous reviewerI found these units very frustrating to put together, the instructions were not helpful and I wasn't really happy with their appearance or function. The clips that hold the units together were a nightmare to install - and i had to buy a further two packs because I wasn't given enough - to be honest I should just stuck with Kallax - it would taken a fraction of the time to build!1
Avoid at all costsAnonymous reviewerI cannot speak poorly enough of it. It is by far the worst piece of furniture I've ever bought from IKEA. It's so bad I've made an account specifically to review it. The assembly system is beyond awful. Nothing fits together properly. I don't know why they've moved away from their usual system, which worked well. After a couple of hours of struggle we finally got it in a usable state. Which is not to say it's built well. That's simply not achievable with given how poorly made it is. You can see where bits haven't clicked together properly, and we've had to use it upside down because the 'top' is simply impossible to get on. But we're just going to have to accept that. It'll be binned and replaced as soon as we have the money to get something better, probably not from IKEA. I honestly cannot caution enough against getting this.1

From grandfather's fishing boxes to playful storage

When product developer Petra Kammari Enarsson was a young student and often moved, she used to furnish her apartments with old fishing boxes given to her by her grandfather who lived on the west coast of Sweden. Years later, when Petra was developing the new EKET storage series, those boxes came to mind. How could she make the series as flexible as the boxes?

New technologies, new hobbies, a new family member ... both small and large changes affect life and people's needs at home. Not least when it comes to all the things that we need space for. Petra Kammari Enarsson is a product developer at IKEA and often visits the homes of customers to experience their everyday living and how good storage can make life at home a little easier. She remembers a family in Copenhagen which expanded every other weekend with the daughter from a previous relationship. ”She didn't have her own room, but the family had a solution where she had a loft bed in the living room and her private things were in a chest on the floor”. Petra thinks it's a good example of how more and more people are living in small spaces, and that a large part of everyday living takes places in the living room where we want things to be both practical and stylish.

Flexible furniture for new needs

Another obvious trend around the world is that many people move more often - just as Petra did when she was young. ”The problem is that a lot of storage furniture is so inflexible – upon moving or new needs arising, they can't be adapted. This means storage isn't optimal and it's difficult to keep track of all your things”. These insights inspired Petra and her colleagues to start looking at a more flexible and personal storage solution – something that can easily be updated so that people don't have to buy new furniture as soon as something in life changes. Petra then started to think about those fishing boxes she had when she was young and which were so easy to stack and move as needed. What if you could make a piece of furniture which consists of various smart modules that can be easily moved around, removed and added to?

Building with blocks

Petra and her team started by ordering cardboard boxes in various sizes. They took the boxes to different room environments where they moved them around like building blocks – stacking and combining them in various ways. The team also researched detailed facts about storage: on average, how many magazines do we have at home? What’s the ideal height for people to put down their mobile phones? ”Many of us put keys, telephones or bags in a specific place when we come home. We usually do it automatically, without thinking about it”, says Petra. The height that seems to suit most people is 80 cm, so a shelf at that height was a given in the mix of shelves, drawers and cabinets in different colours and styles that eventually became the EKET storage series. ”I'm so pleased that we chose to prioritise playfulness and freedom of choice with all the colours and sizes of EKET”, says Petra, who's looking forward to visiting more homes. ”I think that the customers will find lots of exciting combinations that we haven't even thought of!”.

What is constructed board?

We use constructed boards when manufacturing many of our pieces of furniture, such as tables and wardrobes. They are light yet still stable and strong. Each board has a frame made of chipboard, fibreboard or solid wood, while the inside is a honeycomb filling structure made of mostly recycled paper, which is extra durable thanks to its special construction. The board is then covered with a protective paint, foil or veneer depending on the style wanted.
