When the assembled lamp stands next to the packaging, it can be hard to see how it can fit there at all. A part of the explanation is the cross-shaped base. “We realised that we could make a cross instead of a round base – both to save material and to make the lamp dividable. The cross also adds a unique design element.” The lampshade is made of soft plastic and rolled up like a tube in the packaging. When mounted on the lamp base, it spreads the light both evenly and beautifully.

To my delight, assembling it was straightforward, and it impressively expanded to almost ten times the size of its packaging, an aspect that thoroughly amused me. Initially, the lamp shade appeared a bit flimsy, but after consulting the instructions, I easily shaped it correctly, and it now holds together well. Overall, the lamp perfectly meets my needs. Its large and adequately thick shade effectively diffuses the light, providing abundant illumination without the harshness of direct bulb exposure. I would definitely buy it again. Fantastic value for money!

Story
Big design in a small package
Every now and then you need to think outside the famous box to achieve something innovative. But, when we developed BARLAST lamp, we instead stayed inside the box. The goal was a really good lamp at a really good price, and that made the packaging a decisive starting point. From there, we worked our way backwards with materials and design.
Cecilia Sondell Banke, one of our product engineers involved in the work with BARLAST, explains why the packaging can be so crucial for the price: “Transportation is often an essential part of the product cost. By packing the lamp efficiently, we avoid transporting air, and the total cost becomes lower.”

A lower price must never mean compromises with quality. To secure stability and that BARLAST fulfils all legal demands, we made thorough calculations and tough tests. “The products with the lowest price are often the most challenging to develop. All our specialists need to be onboard from the start, and we have to think through the whole process step by step. But, they are also very creative projects that we learn a lot from. And when it comes to BARLAST it resulted in a really nice lamp in a small package,” Cecilia sums up.

Wonder how BARLAST can fit in that small package? Well, that’s quite reasonable. A part of the explanation is the cross-shaped lamp base, which makes it dividable, and that the lampshade is rolled-up like a tube. When the package takes up little space and can be transported efficiently, the cost and the price become lower. It also makes it easier for you to bring your lamp home where it can spread an even and beautiful light in the room.
