When the assembled lamp stands next to the packaging, it can be hard to see how it can fit there at all. A part of the explanation is the cross-shaped base. “We realised that we could make a cross instead of a round base – both to save material and to make the lamp dividable. The cross also adds a unique design element.” The lampshade is made of soft plastic and rolled up like a tube in the packaging. When mounted on the lamp base, it spreads the light both evenly and beautifully.

Epic fail designAnonymous reviewerThe stand goes okay but the shade is much worse than I expected. The material is cheap but still fine if it works - unfortunately it could neither got smooth out or straightened, nor stay click to the other end. The shade never formed a ring “O” and stays like a “B” if you get what I mean.
This lamp has the lowest price among all other lamps cuz there’s a reason, yet I doubt if this product is already a defect ever since it was produced, or the wrong packaging method was chosen and damaged the shade’s material. Seemed no quality controller had ever understood the failing issue.
I’d suggest it’s better for IKEA to discontinue this product, or to update its packaging method - instead of rolling the shade plastic, it should come in flat.

Simple yet stunning!Anonymous reviewerI have seen this online and in person from your store so I've got the idea of how it would be in my room. I followed the instructions from the manual and was able to set up in minutes. The lamp shade is quite tricky to assemble with the three metal pieces falling off few times. But it was sorted out and now I have a good lamp shade making my room cozy. The light reflection is amazing on my dark apple green coloured wall.

I’ve had to always prop it against the corner of the wall so it can stand on its own. If it’s not propped against something, it falls over or just stands very crookedly. Not worth a buy but I bought it for £10 then so I guess I got what I paid for. Looking for a new lamp now because I woke up one day and decided I shouldn’t have to deal with this crooked one daily. It has a good shade but overall not worth it to be honest

It was very easy to assemble, its design was compact and the recommended bulb emits a very kindly light. I found nothing ‘fiddly’ or difficult. Would I recommend it? Yes, without any hesitation.

Did the designer actually build one of these?Anonymous reviewerThis lamp is terrible. It's fiddly to assemble, not very steady on it's base so wobbles quite a bit, unlike the lamp I am having to replace and don't get me started on the lampshade.
Whose bright idea was it to roll the thing up and leave it in a very small box for several months? It's almost impossible to put together yourself, it flies apart at the mere touch of a hand, or if you actually let go of the thing, it folds in on itself so looks more like a heart than a circle, the little bars that are supposed to hold it in place fall out at the slightest touch and the shade just looks cheap. Please get the bright spark that designed this to actually build one that's been in a box for months and then get them to sort it out.
Will not be recommending to anyone and am seriously considering just binning it and buying one from another well known furniture store.

Big design in a small package
Every now and then you need to think outside the famous box to achieve something innovative. But, when we developed BARLAST lamp, we instead stayed inside the box. The goal was a really good lamp at a really good price, and that made the packaging a decisive starting point. From there, we worked our way backwards with materials and design.
Cecilia Sondell Banke, one of our product engineers involved in the work with BARLAST, explains why the packaging can be so crucial for the price: “Transportation is often an essential part of the product cost. By packing the lamp efficiently, we avoid transporting air, and the total cost becomes lower.”

A lower price must never mean compromises with quality. To secure stability and that BARLAST fulfils all legal demands, we made thorough calculations and tough tests. “The products with the lowest price are often the most challenging to develop. All our specialists need to be onboard from the start, and we have to think through the whole process step by step. But, they are also very creative projects that we learn a lot from. And when it comes to BARLAST it resulted in a really nice lamp in a small package,” Cecilia sums up.
