Zero emission IKEA deliveries

At IKEA, we have committed to cutting carbon emissions in all stages of our value chain. As a result, Ingka Group – the biggest IKEA franchisee – is aiming for more than 90% of deliveries globally, to be delivered by electric vehicles (EV) or other IKEA zero-emission solutions by 2028.

By promoting the use of EVs for home deliveries, we want to improve the local environment around our stores and act as a good neighbour. With this we hope to see healthier cities, and a healthier climate.

The road ahead

To inspire the shift to zero emission deliveries, Ingka Group set an ambitious target back in 2018 to reach 100% zero emissions deliveries by 2025. However, the road to 100% zero emissions deliveries has not always been smooth.

Charging infrastructure for electric vehicles has not accelerated as quickly as hoped, and the COVID-19 pandemic greatly affected the availability of EV vehicles. We faced challenges in remote locations, where vehicle range combined with the weight of our products slowed us down. By September 2024, 41.1% of retail home deliveries fulfilled by Ingka Group were made by zero emission vehicles, up from 24.6% the previous year.  To reflect the learnings and current progress, Ingka Group has reformulated its goal to achieve more than 90% of home deliveries made by zero-emissions vehicles by 2028.

This goal will continue to build on the ambition and momentum of the first target whilst being achievable and realistic. The aim will always be to go beyond 90% but the gap to 100% represents the uncertainty that will always remain when delivering to customers, such as lack of chargers in remote locations and possible vehicle breakdowns that require replacement by a non-EV vehicle at short notice to deliver our customers products as promised.

IKEA zero-emissions, what’s our approach?

Our methodology for achieving zero-emission deliveries involves:

Localisations

Identifying and adopting technologies and fuels suitable for the local infrastructure.

Collaborations

Collaborating closely with local authorities, partners, and communities to create an enabling environment for zero-emission logistics.

Reporting

Regularly monitoring and transparently reporting our progress to ensure accountability.

Emission-free deliveries: what is IKEA's approach?

Our approach to achieving our emissions-free deliveries in Belgium consists of:

  • Setting clear and achievable targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in terms of our delivery fleet.

If we look at our total number of last-mile deliveries, we achieved 47% of these with a zero-emission vehicle by the end of 2024. From our IKEA stores, this was 70% of all last-mile deliveries.

    Targets for the coming years:
    • More than 80% of last-mile deliveries emission-free by the end of 2025.
    • 95% of last-mile deliveries emission-free by the end of 2026.
    • 100% of last-mile deliveries emission-free by the end of 2027.
  • Having about 60 electric vehicles on the roads of Belgium (February 2025) making deliveries for IKEA.
  • Identifying and applying the technologies and fuels most suitable for the infrastructure in Belgium. Looking at the many alternatives (e.g. hydrogen, other types of vehicles) and not just electric vehicles.
  • Over the next 12 months, expanding our existing charging infrastructure at customer touch points so that there are charging options for the electric vehicles of all our green road users: customers, employees and service partners.
  • Working closely with local authorities and communities (cities and regions), establishing partnerships by joining the Green Deal Brussels Capital Region and Green Deal Flanders to create an environment conducive to zero-emission logistics.
  • Regularly monitoring our progress and report on it transparently in our “Summary Annual Report and Sustainability Report” to ensure compliance.
