IKEA is all-in for cotton from more sustainable sources
As of September 1, 2015 – all cotton used in the future production of IKEA products will come from more sustainable sources.

Cotton from more sustainable sources means that the cotton is grown with less water, less chemical fertilizer and less pesticides, while increasing profit margins for farmers leading to a better quality of life for their families, including schooling for their children through our collaborations with UNICEF and Save the Children.

Cotton is an important raw material for IKEA, used in many products, from sofas to towels. However, when grown conventionally, cotton farming uses large amounts of chemicals and water, raising costs and making it harder for farmers to earn a living. This milestone is part of a long journey to help transform the cotton industry. In 2010, IKEA together with the conservation organization WWF and other leading public and private organisations helped set up the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI).

IKEA New Haven in the Community
A Kitchen for CitySeed
IKEA New Haven has partnered with local non-profit organization CitySeed and has donated a brand new kitchen being installed into their office space on Grand Ave in the Wooster Square area.

CitySeed is best known in the community as the host of five outdoor farmers markets throughout the city and when the weather turns brisk, an indoor market as well. The passionate group of staff and volunteers at CitySeed do much more then produce the markets. They engage the community in growing an equitable, local food system that promotes economic development, community development and sustainable agriculture.

One of the impressive programs created and driven by CitySeed is the Master Cooks Corps. The Master Cooks Corps provides a passionate community of cooks with materials and resources necessary to expand the world of healthy, cultural, affordable food instruction. Participants learn hands-on teaching techniques and receive training in healthy food preparation, improving their own skills with the intention of spreading their knowledge through various communities. The new kitchen being installed by IKEA New Haven will be a tremendous asset to the Master Cooks Corp program and other initiatives and events launch by CitySeed. Proper storage, ample counter space, movable islands with work surfaces and additional sinks are just some of the many features that the new kitchen will showcase.

Please check back here often to keep up to date on the progress and eventually see the finished project.

Ridge Hill School in Hamden
IKEA Cardboard boxes makeover
Ridge Hill School, an elementary school in Hamden, CT, has an annual international fair in late spring. Classes from kindergarten to 6th grade were assigned a country to research with the outcome being an all school exhibition open to families and friends.

Each dayIKEA New Haven receives shipments of goods that come in recyclable cardboard boxes in a variety of sizes and shapes. Over the course of a few weeks the IKEA New Haven’s logistic team saved a number of boxes which were then donated to Ridge Hilland transformed into fantastic globally iconic structures and symbols from the different countries. The students took recycling to a whole new level with their amazing projects. Well done kids.
