Marinated herring is ready to be eaten right away. A delicacy that does not require any cooking, perfect for a quick lunch or simple dinner.

The jar had not been opened and the seal had not been broken, but it was spilling out anyway. I enjoy herring and was looking forward to eating it on a special occasion. It should not have gone bad before being opened.... at least not within a reasonably short time. I probably should add that it was not refrigerated when I purchased it, so I didn't refrigerate it when I got it home.1
