AMAZINGLY STURDY DISHESLee N.I bought 68 dishes from IKEA’s Oftast line: 16 each dinner plates, bread plates, pasta plates, and soup bowls (all 89 cents each) and four serving bowls ($2.49 each). I had them shipped from Houston to my local FedEx office in New Orleans for $3.99–total price for all this, including tax and shipping, was $74.70. FedEx apparently ran this box over with a truck somewhere. It looked ridiculously bad. The local FedEx office called to apologize and ask if they should refuse delivery, or if I wanted it and to take it up with IKEA. As either way I’d be taking it up with IKEA, I decided to take the box, record everything, and tally the damage. Of those 68 dishes, exactly two soup bowls were broken. Everything else was perfectly fine. That is how sturdy these dishes are and how good IKEA’s packing was. For $1.78, I’m not even bothering calling IKEA but just picking up those two bowls from the physical store when I’m in Houston next month.5

Multi tasker plateGWENNThis might not seem like the plate you would serve you mother-in-law a Sunday dinner on but I keep a stack in the cupboard for reheating in the micro, plates for the kids, even if I'm sending something to a neighbor and don't want to sacrifice my best plates. The material is glass so non-absorbent, non-staining and smell catching. I've dropped a couple and not easy to break. A plus!5

If you like lightweight dishesNicoleIf you like lightweight dishes without being plastic, this is for you. Think Corelle dishes without the design. Perfect!5

What is glass?

Glass is mainly made of sand, soda, and lime melted at a high temperature. Tempering or various additives gives you extra-strong and impact-resistant glass that in some cases can be taken straight from freezer to oven without cracking. A big benefit is how glass can be recycled over and over without the quality deteriorating. Also, a lot less energy is needed to melt recycled glass compared to new raw materials. Our goal is to eventually use only recycled glass in our range.

Designer thoughts

"The challenge when I designed OFTAST series was to combine good function with a very low price. I gave the plates and bowls a timeless, functional and harmonious form that makes both the manufacturing and transport efficient. And I chose to use the material tempered glass, which is thin and elegant, yet durable. My hope is that OFTAST will therefore work well in many kitchens all around the world."
