OVER 100% PRICE INCREASE.JackThis bookcase cost $149 in October of 2020, $199 in June of 2022, $249 in March of 2025, and as of January 2026 is $329!!!! Save your money!
Wouldn’t recommendMollyThese are not good quality for the price. I bought the same line of shelves several years ago and these are notably more flimsy (and more expensive!). Not worth it for the price.
Also, don’t buy it to use to hold actual books. There’s an edge so the first and last book of each row will be hidden.

Badly designed - I regret this purchaseTimothyI just put my Hemnes bookcase into the trash after owning it for 1 1/2 years. it began (literally) falling apart a couple of months ago, and I ended up replacing it with a sturdy, veneer and chipboard bookcase purchased at a thrift shop. The Hemnes has some good features. The shelves are very nice, and it looks good. But the side panels are thin and weak, and do not hold weight well. I was not able to give it away to the charity thrift shop; they said they could only get $5-10 for it. My wife has now forbidden me from purchasing any more Ikea products, which I think is a little unfair, since we have some Ikea furniture that looks good and holds up well, e.g. the Fjallbo shelving unit. But this Hemnes is a loser.
Flimsy and CheapStevenDespite how it looks in the picture, this is a cheap bookshelf. Less than a year after assembly, one shelf fell apart. Another is wobbly. The back is soft, and doesn't fully attach to the sides. Unfortunately, this is the epitome of low, "wayfair" quality furniture. Stay away.
shelves are not sturdy or levelAmylooks good, but the shelves arent secure. the knobs you stick into the case and then the shelf sits on top of them - they are not lined up properly and the shelf is constantly falling. Very disappointing for how much it costs.

Hemnes book shelfMaryI really like the bookcase. However, when putting it together, it would have been helpful if the pictures would have been larger (we have problems with our vision). Another help aid would be a part id on each part (i.e. A/B).
This price increase is insane.PatrickThis case specifically was $250. It dropped to $200, and I got one. I was about to get another and see the price has jumped to almost $350. An almost $100 increase after it was just lowered is insane, especially since the quality has been wavering. This is extremely disappointing. I absolutely loved this series.
FlimsyEricaPoor quality, more delicate than a popsicle stick. Will not be able to move this to another room, much less another home. Disappointing.
Double the priceRaymondI have seven of these; the one star is for doubling the price since I bought mine. I came here to order more, but there is no way I will be paying this inflated price. It's Ikea, for goodness sakes, not a high end furniture store. Nope.
Bookcase doubling as a wall partitionCherylGreat product! Very sturdy, and a breeze to assemble. Directions were clear and precise. I'm using it as a wall partition to partially enclose my home office, bolted to the wall and floor (with wood paneling on the back portion facing the other room). I am very pleased with the final look of the space.
HEMNES LIGHT GREEN BOOKSHELFSadiaThis a very beautiful product and we have the Hemnes red bookshelf as well and they both complement each other beautifully. We love the look of this color and design. We love how the back of the shelf is light green color and looks very nice. Love this amazing shelf!!
Looks Good, poor instructionsChristopherSteps 6 and 7 the parts look identical in the instructions. They're different parts, but you wont realize where the difference are important until steps 15 when a screw wont go in, and 24, when theres no place to insert the pegs to support the bottom shelf. I ended up drilling new holes instead of taking apart the whole shelf and starting over.
Now that it's together, it looks great, hopefully it holds together despite my alterations
Not a great valueAngelaI love the versatility of IKEA furniture and the simple lines and styling of their pieces. However, it's really expensive to purchase a bookcase or a few and pay as much for them as a solid wood piece at a vintage furniture store. The paperboard backing makes the piece feel flimsy and the feet should come with sliders to make it easy to move for painting, re-arranging, cleaning. I do like the white stained look, as it goes with my decor. The top hangs over just slightly, making it impossible to tie the pieces together with other Hemnes bookcases. We solved this problem by adding a piece of door stop trim between the bookcases - it was a perfect fit, enabling us to screw them together as one unit for a nicer look. However, a suggestion would be to get rid of the overhang or include filler strips with the purchase so others can have a cohesive look to the bookcases. If tasked with purchasing again, I may not due to the price and quality for that price.
Beautiful, sturdy and very functionalAinuraI love this Hemnes bookcase! The quality is excellent — it feels sturdy, stable and well-made. The shelves hold a lot of weight and don’t sag, even with books and decor. The design is simple, clean and fits perfectly into a Scandinavian-style interior.
Assembly was easy, everything lined up well, and the final result looks much more expensive than it is. The white finish is smooth and bright, and it really refreshed the whole room.
Overall, I’m very happy with this purchase and definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a beautiful and reliable bookcase.

Awful, cheap, disappointing.JulieThis is the worst piece of furniture I have ever purchased from Ikea. I bought 2 of these to replace the Billy bookshelves I purchased 5yrs ago since the shelves are starting to sag, and frankly those are sturdier than this hunk of junk. Immediately took it apart and it’s going back to the store.
Attractive, but not designed well imoTimothyI liked this at first, and I had a good first year with it, BUT it literally began falling apart after a year. Here is the problem: the side panels are too light and weak, and they can't hold too much weight. So after a while they begin bowing outward, and then the shelves start falling out. The back panel, stupidly, is in 2 pieces, one resting on top of the other, so they fell off. It should be one piece that attaches firmly to the frame. Instead of going to the trouble of returning it, I instead got a hammer and a bunch of nails and took an afternoon to nail the shelves to the frame. I tossed out the back panels. It is a nice looking bookcase, but I can't recommend it. This should be redesigned.
Good, Sturdy Bookcase in a Cool ColorToddThis bookcase is all solid wood. The levelling feet are perfect for my apartment which is old with floors that sag a little. The shelves are adjustable if you have some larger books, like school textbooks, and some smaller books, like paperbacks. The color is modern looking and stylish, and it goes with items like the RODFLIK floor & table lamps, the FISKBO picture frames, and the RELATERA bookends. A fantastic find that looks great in my living room.
