I regret buying theseMeghanLess than a year after re-doing my home library with these I sorely regret getting them. I've never had a worse piece of furniture. There were very small varitions between the 4 units in where holes were and how the backing was taped. This shouldn't matter in a perfect world, but because the shelf pins are barely long enough, it makes a HUGE impact if it's not perfectly constructed. Over several months of light display use, two of my units have had the back pop out and the shelves fall down to the point they are unuseable. When the shelves fall, they push the back out more, which further warps the unit. I'm sick of fighting with them and wish I'd never bought them. I'm going to have to buy replacement hardware and build them back together as if they are just pieces of wood. I do not recomend these to anyone. 1
Unstable and FrustratingLawrenceI've had this bookshelf for 3 years. And, every time we move it, it is a frustrating nightmare (currently 3am in the morning dealing..). The pathetic architects felt that a piece of really thick backerboard (think really thick cardboard) would provide structural integrity to the rectangular frame. They felt they could defy physics by using a notch that the backerboard would happily stay inserted into with no assistance (other than luck). As you load the shelves with books, the sides start to bow outward thus releasing the backerboard from its non-existant shackles. THEN, shelves start to fall and its time to try to put Humpty Dumpty back together, rinse and repeat. I absolutely hate this bookshelf. And, I'll have to say that I've ended up hating every piece of furniture that is bought from Ikea. The sad Ziggy inspired instruction manual is the sad prologue to yet another saga of me kicking myself in the buttocks. Do yourself a favor, buy properly designed furniture, not this garbage. 1
DisappointedSamanthaI was happy with this bookcase when I first assembled it back in July of last year. Now the shelves won't sit properly and one of the cams fell out of the middle shelf while it was just sitting in my daughter's room. It's hardly been used and the backing is gapping and falling off. I've spent an hour trying to make it work now and I'm very disappointed. The back board is flimsy and one of the only pieces that keeps the whole thing together. Unfortunately I don't know if I can fix it and continue using it. 2
Collapsed in 3 monthsEmilyWhen I built it, it was pretty iffy. The middle shelf is attached to the backing, which is flimsy particle board that likes to shift out of its slot. But I thought it'd do until we moved at least. Anyway, fast forward a couple months. Shelves have collapsed several times. I've just shrugged it off. Until tonight when all of the bottom shelves caved in. Just horribly made. Not worth it, even if you need a stopgap. Would never, ever recommend and I wish I could get my money back.1
BookshelfKirstenNice looking bookshelf5
Happy with purchase.JudithThe bookcases were easy to assemble and much sturdier than I had expected. With a few pieces of wood trim, they look built-in.5
Quality has gone to potJasonFirst, I already own two Hemnes shelves that I bought several years ago, and they are fantastic. I love them. I bought a third one in December when a very old shelf collapsed in my office. This one was a whole different story. The fixed shelf did not pull the frame together as it should. The cheap plastic clips (who uses plastic clips to secure cam locks, anyway!?) just fall right out of the shelf, and it has zero structural integrity. When I thought I had it ready I set it up in my office. It lasted roughly 2 months before every shelf just collapsed, ruining the bindings on THOUSANDS of dollars worth of books. Maybe this is just a bad unit but it doesn't matter. I'm not risking it again. Now the idiots at Ikea will send their bot to tell me I can return it within six months for a quality evaluation or refund. PAY ME BACK THE THOUSANDS IN BOOKS I LOST THANKS TO YOUR SHODDY PRODUCT. 1
Wonderful itemChristinaThis bookcase is amazing. Solid wood, great size, great look.5
Beautiful bookshelfAmyThis bookshelf is very beautiful and holds a lot of books/items. Be sure to measure ahead of time ti account for height and width. The white and wood tones look great in many room settings. Installation was clear and easy to complete. Highly recommend and would definitely purchase again.5
Backing Split / Miscut .....GeorgeThe TAPE that held the glorified carboard that is the backing of this bookcase split. Gosh forbit you have a whole piece of cardboard. Luxuries like that are too much to ask for. Also, one of the support pieces miscut on one of the two cases I bought, Forcing a slight skew to the unit. Adjusted with feet. I should have to do this. Poor Quality.1
Hemmed bookcaseAmieMy daughter loves this bookcase. It was exactly what she was looking for. She uses is to display her books and her completed LEGO sets. It is sturdy, well made, and just the right size. 4
Not worth itCharI would urge you to find a bookshelf solution other than this one. I've assembled a good amount of Ikea furniture. But this Hemnes bookshelf, although fairly simple, was the LEAST clear set of instructions I've seen. I twice had to deconstruct things in order to go back a step or two. The instructions expect you to catch onto little distinctions which it points out VERY subtly. These details turn out to be crucial. I know that's the case for all Ikea manuals, but usually they do a good enough job at drawing your attention to what's relevant. Oh and I'll just tell you now that on step 18 of the instructions, they're like, "Okay, now use your BUDDY to hold this up." What??? Since when was this a two-person job? Also--One of the two huge side panels, which came pre-assembled, split apart early in the construction process as well. Not any fault of my own, just bad assembly on their end. It's quite simply not worth the $250--save yourself the heartbreak.2
Missing parts and poor resolution PollyPurchased for a friend. Started to assemble and found numerous wooden parts missing. Made another 2.5hr trip to store - no help. Reached out to IKEA via email, only received 2 pieces. Still need more, was advised it’s a manufacturing issue. Now I need to return the entire thing…PITA. 1
Love the quality and look. It is beautiful.CarmenI love the quality, look and quality. 5
DisappointedGretchenI used to love these shelves and the quality is no longer there. So disappointed.1
SturdyDonaldThe unit once assembled is very stable. The bottom shelf is a bit smaller than the opening, but doesn't affect function, and won't fall through. Overall good unit and price. 5
Hemnes Bookshelf #7MaryThis is a solid bookcase especially for the price. We have purchased 7 of them over the years and the quality remains consistent. If I could change one thing it would be to offer a more solid white color rather than the opaque white currently offered.5
Terrible Engineering Design BrandonI have spent over 5 hours trying to put this book case together with the center shelf cam connectors and the back panels and they do not fit. The back panels do not slide into the slits nicely and bow the two side support panels which pulls the cam connectors off the screws. I do not Recommend purchasing this shelf strictly because of pieces not cut to correct shape and terrible install. 1
Most screw holes crookedBeverlyWe have bought Hemnes products happily for years, but we just bought two of these shelves and they required much redrilling of very crooked holes. Not pleased.2
Love it!DanielThis bookshelf is very sturdy and presents with an upscale look. We have received so many compliments on it. It is tall which is great for keeping things out of reach of children.5

Our take on wood

Wood is the material most commonly associated with IKEA furniture, and for good reasons. It’s renewable, recyclable, durable, ages beautifully and it is an important part of our Scandinavian design heritage. At IKEA, we believe that sourced in responsible way, wood is a key change driver for climate mitigation. In 2012, we set a goal that by 2020 our wood would be from more sustainable sources. We are happy to announce that we have reached this goal and today, more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

Forests are critical for life on earth

Forests contribute to maintaining balance in the atmosphere, purify the air that we breathe and are part of the water cycle. They nourish wildlife biodiversity and provide homes for indigenous communities who depend on forests for their livelihoods. 90% of plant and animal species living on the planet need forests to survive. They provide sources of food, fuel, timber and many other ecosystem services that we rely upon. Sourcing approximately 19 million m3 of roundwood per year from some 50 countries, IKEA has a significant impact on the world’s forests and the timber industry and a huge responsibility to positively influence how wood is sourced. Responsible wood sourcing and forest management ensure that the needs of people dependent on forests are met, that businesses can work sustainably, that forest ecosystems are protected and biodiversity is enhanced.

100% wood from more sustainable sources

At IKEA, we work with strict industry standards to promote responsible forestry. We don’t allow any wood in our supply chain from forest areas that are illegal or contain high conservation values or from forest areas with social conflict. Before starting to work with IKEA, suppliers must demonstrate that they meet IKEA critical requirements on wood sourcing. IKEA requires all suppliers to source wood from more sustainable sources (FSC-certified or recycled wood). All suppliers are audited regularly and non-compliant suppliers are required to implement immediate corrective actions. By working together with our suppliers, we are proud to announce that we have reached our more sustainable sources goal, which we set out to achieve by 2020. Today more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030

As pressure on the world’s forests and the surrounding eco-systems increases due to unsustainable agriculture, the expansion of infrastructure and illegal logging, it is time to take an even more holistic approach to protect and support these important resources for generations to come. The IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030 set out to improve forest management, enhance biodiversity, mitigate climate change and support the rights and needs of people who depend on forests across the whole supply chain and drive innovation to use wood in even smarter ways. The agenda focuses on three key areas: • Making responsible forest management the norm across the world. • Halting deforestation and reforesting degraded landscapes. • Driving innovation to use wood in smarter ways by designing all products from the very beginning to be reused, refurbished, remanufactured, and eventually recycled.

We accomplish more by working together

For many years, IKEA has partnered with businesses, governments, social groups and non-governmental organisations to fight forest degradation and deforestation and increase the volume and availability of wood from responsibly managed forests both for our own supply chain and beyond. We are on a journey to improve global forest management and make responsible wood sourcing the industry standard, contributing to building resilient forest landscapes and improve biodiversity.

What is solid wood?

Solid wood is one of our favorite materials and is part of our Scandinavian heritage. It is also a timeless material with many uses. Regardless of the tree species, it is durable, beautiful and renewable. We strive to use this raw material as smartly and efficiently as possible to avoid waste – and we also invest in facilities and logistics so that we can increase the use of recycled wood.
