Sides pop outMandyWe bought 2 for our living room. I wanted to get the Billy but my boyfriend convinced me to get these because they are "solid wood". More like flimsy wood. Got all the books on and I love the look. Then the other night I'm looking at it and realize all my books are leaning back. The weight from the books caused the sides to come away from the back and the shelves were falling down! And I didn't overload the shelves, just one row of books. We put it back together and nailed in some boards to brace it but now I can only store 2/3 of the books per shelf as before which means I need another bookcase!!1
Worst Ikea Bookcase EVERKI really regreat buying this bookcase. This is the only bookcase where you don't nail in the back. You have to akwardly slide it into groves & then smooth it out which require two people to do. You may think you can customize where the shelves go, but you can't, because the pegs that they give you to hold the shelves only fit in certain slots. So either the employee didn't carve out the holes big enough or the just decide to carve out random holes to look like you can customize them. Oh, & one of my shelves was cut a little too small so I have to go to the hardwear store to hopefully find a beg that can fit in these stupid holes & is long enough hold this shelf. I called to see if I can have ikea come and pick this up, but because I bought it in store I would have to carry this 6.4 ft bookcase to the closest ikea which is an hour away and hope it doesn't get damaged in the process to return it. 1
Low quality and breaksCourtneyI’ve had this bookshelf for less than two years. I STRUGGLED to put it together and even then it was flimsy. I moved it from it’s original room for the first time and now none of the shelves will stay, besides the more permanent middle shelf. I made sure to be careful since it’s one of my favorite things but still it is messed up. The middle shelf’s plastic screw covers broke in less than and hour and the whole thing is ruined. I love the look but the actual quality and usability is not what is advertised. And the flimsy back paneling never matched right but I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt since it seemed to be sturdy enough. Also the front right foot balance does not rotate so you are stuck with it being uneven. I have loved every other product from IKEA before this one. Very disappointed and I hope they make improvements 1
Check boxes for same country before buying StacyWe ordered two bookcases but only could assemble one unit since the each unit has two boxes and three came from Brazil and the fourth one from another country which had a different manual and different parts that was not compatible. So we had to return one since they customer service is not able to send parts without numbers easily. The coloring of the wood was nicer from Brazil. We do like the one unit that we successfully put together.2
Gorgeous bookcasesJennyI booked help through TaskRabbit to assemble these and they turned out beautifully! You can adjust most of the shelves to suit your needs as well.5
Love Hemnes!SusanThis Hemnes bookcase is great! Easy to put together, sturdy, and made of solid wood. We love the Hemnes line.5
ExcellentMary A.Excellent product Easy to assemble Highly recommend.5
Great deal when on saleCaraI got two of these bookcases when they were on sale. I love them! I got the orange and brown. It's a nice burnt orange color and wasn't too bright which I was concerned at first. The thing that takes it one star off is the legs have adjustable screw where you have to use a leveler to ensure it's straight. Any time you move it you have to check to make sure the legs are even and level before bolting it down to the wall. Also the screws they provide are not long enough and had to go to the hardware store to get longer screws to ensure it holds in place. Overall, though despite those two items. I love my bookcases! It holds all my books, manga, and dvds!4
Needs better instructionsEmeraldDecent value for the money, and I appreciate the style. It definitely requires two people to put together and could use clearer instructions. Sturdiness is middling - not impressive but not worrying either. Overall happy with it.4
Love!LeahBeautiful addition to my office/sewing room. Assembly was easy, I did it on my own, no problem. I love the fact that it is real wood (aside from the back panel). The finish is very nice and it holds so much. Very happy with this purchase, especially because I got it on sale! Highly recommended5

Metal Shelf Support Pegs Not AdequateJimmieLike the smaller HEMNES shelf unit I purchased, this one had the same issues. The quality of the pine used is good, but the color in places is more akin to a whitewash or a primer. Also, some pilot holes for screws were not there. As a stand-alone, this larger unit was much sturdier. However, I would not put much on it, such as heavy books. If erecting more than one unit you would need to tie them together with metal crossties for added sturdiness. The shelves for this unit need wider and longer support pegs.3
Huge improvement over previous shelvingCharlesThe Hemnes shelves have a much better style than the decades old "billy"- the edging / woodwork and elevation from the floor is really beautiful. I have a set of this color in one room and then another set of the dark brown / black. Great pieces and they feel solid.5
Beautiful bookcase!SaraThis bookshelf is well-made and was easy to put together. The color with the red makes it distinctive and it is wonderful holding our books. I think I’ll buy another one.5
nice fixtureJames R.this bookshelf is perfect for your dvd collection.5
A bookcase..Not for books!!! Garbage!!!StevenPurchased the whole line for my sons room. The bookcase -VERY DISAPPOINTED.!! Side walls flex, shelves fall!! Backing is not nailed into side panels so there is no structural integrity! I took out books and just used it for light decorative pieces. Still falling apart!! It’s going in the garbage!! Malm or Billy Bookcases are simple and sturdy. IKEA missed the mark here completely with the Hemnes Bookcase. Don’t Buy it!!1
Beautiful bookcaseEstelitaMaterial: wood, brown/black, and natural stained. Looks great!5
Beautiful BookshelfIrene P.I just bought a new home and was in need of bookshelves for my extensive collection of books. I ordered two of these. The order, delivery, and assembly was easy and a quick process. They look great and I’m so impressed with the quality!5
Happy HusbandSusan S.My husband collects books and we've been wanting built in bookcases. I decided they were too expensive. A friend suggested I look at IKEA. I bought 2 of the HEMNES and had them attached to the wall. My husband absolutely loves them. He shows them off to anyone who comes to the house. Couldn't be happier.5
Nice and easy to put togetherAlesiaLooks really pretty, matches my furniture5

Our take on wood

Wood is the material most commonly associated with IKEA furniture, and for good reasons. It’s renewable, recyclable, durable, ages beautifully and it is an important part of our Scandinavian design heritage. At IKEA, we believe that sourced in responsible way, wood is a key change driver for climate mitigation. In 2012, we set a goal that by 2020 our wood would be from more sustainable sources. We are happy to announce that we have reached this goal and today, more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

Forests are critical for life on earth

Forests contribute to maintaining balance in the atmosphere, purify the air that we breathe and are part of the water cycle. They nourish wildlife biodiversity and provide homes for indigenous communities who depend on forests for their livelihoods. 90% of plant and animal species living on the planet need forests to survive. They provide sources of food, fuel, timber and many other ecosystem services that we rely upon. Sourcing approximately 19 million m3 of roundwood per year from some 50 countries, IKEA has a significant impact on the world’s forests and the timber industry and a huge responsibility to positively influence how wood is sourced. Responsible wood sourcing and forest management ensure that the needs of people dependent on forests are met, that businesses can work sustainably, that forest ecosystems are protected and biodiversity is enhanced.

100% wood from more sustainable sources

At IKEA, we work with strict industry standards to promote responsible forestry. We don’t allow any wood in our supply chain from forest areas that are illegal or contain high conservation values or from forest areas with social conflict. Before starting to work with IKEA, suppliers must demonstrate that they meet IKEA critical requirements on wood sourcing. IKEA requires all suppliers to source wood from more sustainable sources (FSC-certified or recycled wood). All suppliers are audited regularly and non-compliant suppliers are required to implement immediate corrective actions. By working together with our suppliers, we are proud to announce that we have reached our more sustainable sources goal, which we set out to achieve by 2020. Today more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030

As pressure on the world’s forests and the surrounding eco-systems increases due to unsustainable agriculture, the expansion of infrastructure and illegal logging, it is time to take an even more holistic approach to protect and support these important resources for generations to come. The IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030 set out to improve forest management, enhance biodiversity, mitigate climate change and support the rights and needs of people who depend on forests across the whole supply chain and drive innovation to use wood in even smarter ways. The agenda focuses on three key areas: • Making responsible forest management the norm across the world. • Halting deforestation and reforesting degraded landscapes. • Driving innovation to use wood in smarter ways by designing all products from the very beginning to be reused, refurbished, remanufactured, and eventually recycled.

We accomplish more by working together

For many years, IKEA has partnered with businesses, governments, social groups and non-governmental organisations to fight forest degradation and deforestation and increase the volume and availability of wood from responsibly managed forests both for our own supply chain and beyond. We are on a journey to improve global forest management and make responsible wood sourcing the industry standard, contributing to building resilient forest landscapes and improve biodiversity.

Material

What is solid wood?

Solid wood is one of our favorite materials and is part of our Scandinavian heritage. It is also a timeless material with many uses. Regardless of the tree species, it is durable, beautiful and renewable. We strive to use this raw material as smartly and efficiently as possible to avoid waste – and we also invest in facilities and logistics so that we can increase the use of recycled wood.
