Flimsy and "birch" is YELLOWJillThe birch color is extremely deceiving. It looks very neutral on the photo but it is very yellow in person. It's also so flimsy. The twist anchors holding it together are plastic, the particle board is just that, solid particle board covered in essentially contact paper which scuffs and tears so easily. Will be returning!

Great idea....in theory KellyI have purchased many Billy bookcases over the years and love them. I saw this version with the glass doors and thought it would be perfect for my small travel souvenirs. Yes and no. Sadly the doors are so heavy the bookcase can NOT support the weight. It immediately tips over when trying to open a door. Do not get these unless you are willing to anchor the entire case to the wall. This should definitely be noted in the description. If we would have known that we would not have purchased it.
Very beautiful and makes a statementRachellThese bookcases are beautiful. I have the dark/black bookcases with glass doors and they are stunning. I use them for my home library and they each hold about 200 books comfortably. I also purchased some IKEA bookcase lights that sit on top and angle down for night time use. These are very easy and fast to put together and sit solidly on my wood floors. The notches in the bottom back side allow room for the baseboards to fit snugly against the back of the bookcase and the wall. I will be purchasing more in the future as my book collection grows. A friend also has these same bookcases in the blue color and they are stunning.
Looks Great, Needs Better InstructionsBenThe bookshelf looks great and is fairly easy to assemble, however the doors look symmetrical for assembly but are not. The instructions don't offer anything in terms of orientation for the doors further leading to the misunderstanding that they're symmetrical. If you don't find the correct orientation the first time, you'll end up with an ugly hole where the knob is meant to go. This is incredibly frustrating.
Looks beautifulAngelaI got two of these bookcases w the glass doors in white. A few things to note - the white is not a true paper white color. It is a warmer white and also works w an ivory color scheme. It is a beautiful color but not crisp white. I also decided to cover the backing of the shelving w peel and stick wallpaper. It looks really good but most peel and stick won't actually lift up to reposition because of the paper like texture of the backer. Because the unit is narrow (which I wanted) and has a slight cut out at the base on the back to account for the trim on your walls, the shelving MUST be attached to the wall w the safety bracket at the top or else it will tip over. The shelves are beautiful and I get many compliments on them but those are a few helpful things to know.

Was not expecting it to be this greatStephanieEasy to assemble. Structure is sturdy and seems to be built to last. Glass doors were surprisingly easy to install. If other reviews say they had a hard time installing it, they probably didn't loosen the screw a bit first as the instructions state. Having a second person helping you will also make it easier to install. Something I didn't expect overall: The space between shelves will not be consistent. Some shelves will be taller than others.
A great solution for my dining room HelenNeeded more storage for an assortment of treasures and considered several options from other merchants. This piece looks great and I have received several compliments on it. I curated and arranged my heirloom pieces, books, a few dishes, and an old portrait from my parents wedding. I am very happy with it. Task Rabbit assembled and placed it in a couple of hours.

One is still uneven and despite calling IKEA’s customer support, I was left even more frustrated by the representative’s lack of knowledge of the item and the poor service I received. I have been unable to correct the door and don’t want to spend any further time sitting on the phone. Also, the backing for the bookcase is of very low quality, as well as some of the hardware- everything should be metal, not plastic.

DANGEROUS PRODUCT! Glass Door Shattered Randomly!ChristopherI purchased this in Feb. 2021 and last night (2/14/2024) one of the glass panes on the door made a loud pop noise and the glass was shattered, but still holding together. Nothing was touching the glass when this happened and I had not opened the door in more than a week. Had the glass crashed to the floor, my cat could have been injured, as he was sitting near it at the time of the breakage. The glass barely held itself together as I carefully removed the door in order to capture the falling glass into a large cardboard box. I have the dark red model and it appears this color is no longer offered, so a replacement door is not likely available. I purchased this with cash, in person at the Stoughton, MA store and my receipt is long gone. I no longer trust the remaining three glass panes and I will likely remove the other door. I am extremely disappointed this happened and I do not recommend purchasing this cabinet.

We took a closer look at BILLY and came up with some ideas. One of them means more efficient use of materials, and another makes the bookcase easier to assemble and take apart.
“BILLY was introduced in 1979 and has helped millions of people to organize books and other things in the home. But the world has changed a lot since then, and even popular big-sellers need to adapt to new demands and ways of living,” says Umut Ates, one of our co-workers.
Paper means smarter use of raw materials

BILLY fits just as well in the living room as in other areas of the home – the office, dining room or library. It’s easy to expand and combine with other furniture. But one thing that has had potential for improvement is how the bookcase is assembled and taken apart. “Previously, you had to use about 50 small nails to get the back panel in place, but that’s history now. Instead, you snap on the back panel without any tools,” explains Umut. It also makes it easier to disassemble BILLY without damaging it if you move or want to resell your bookcase. “The improvements have made BILLY more adaptable – it can keep up changing life situations – and it wouldn’t surprise me if this storage hero is as popular in 40 years as it is today.”
