Great bookcaseCjI bought these for my basement. I have a lot of books. They brighten an otherwise dark area. They are solid and easily hold hundreds of books. They are incredibly easy to put together. But not easy to lift. 🤪
Buyer Beware: Product ChangedEmilyI loved my previous Billy bookcases and bought another after the new year. They changed the product! The backing board used to be seamless and now has two lines running vertically that are very obvious. Makes the product look cheap. They also changed the finish of the edges to a different texture and it just isn't the same. Kind of threw my project off and had to rethink placement because they do not look good next to the old versions. So sad with this update. I hope they take feedback and at least change back to the seamless backing style.
Disappointing ChangesMarciWe have a billy bookcase purchased in 2024 and one purchased this year and the differences are really disappointing.
The facing/trim of the newer version came dented and scratched because they no longer use the plastic trim. I understand the desire for less plastic, but they just added more plastic by changing the way the backing is attached.
The back on the newer version is loose and the demarcation of the folds are clearly more visible when compared to the previous version. It looks cheap and is not the quality I have come to expect from IKEA.
I have been using IKEA products for a long time, and previously they have been reliable for affordability and consistency. Unfortunately, there seems to be discrepancies in their quality control with a focus on profitability versus longevity of their furniture. I hope that IKEA will consider improving these things because the billy bookcase has long been a staple in many households.

So many complimentsRobinI am loving my Billy book shelves. They are well constructed and solidly built. They look so elegant and are the perfect touch for my library. I've received compliments from anyone that has seen them.
Product has changedCarolineI bought these shelves 2 years ago and love them. I just bought a new one to add to my wall of shelves and the quality has dropped significantly. They use to have higher quality caps on the front facing edges (thicker and slightly textured, prevented damage). Now, the edges are wrapped in low quality contact paper. They came dented and stained from water out of the box. They looks terrible next to the 2 year old shelves. I'm so disappointed.

Good productAndyIkea has improved their assembly hardware and backing. The new backing is not like the old cardboard with a bunch of nails. Now it's more "fitted" to the shelf and when installed does not have the "gaps" like to old style cardboard and nails set-up. Overall a decent product when on sale.

Great BookcaseCaitlynThis bookcase is well made and easy to put together. i bought 2 full-size and 1 small for the corner with the extensions. I love it. Its perfect for holding my 3d print filaments.
Warning: White Color is Different Than Previous Version DanielWarning! If you have a pre 2025 manufacturer and material change white Billy bookshelf your new 2025 Billy bookshelf will NOT match. The new manufacturer / material version is an off white instead of a true white. Pretty disappointed.

Strong chemical odorGilI’ve had Billy bookshelves in the past and never had a problem with them having an odor, but I purchased this model and it made my car smell so bad just brining it home that I couldn’t bring it into my house. It has a very strong chemical odor. After 3 days in my car opening the windows each day, the smell didn’t lessen at all. I went online and saw other people have issues with this model smelling after it was put together in in their house for many weeks or months, so I decided to return it as I do not want to contaminate my indoor air with chemical smell. Too bad, I usually love Ikea products, but not at this time.

Quality Control is GarbageTrevorJust left Ikea and started putting it together and it didn't come with enough wooden pegs that are necessary for the backbone of its structure. Are you guys kidding me?
Good QualityRachelI have bought two for daughters room and two for my craft room, LOve them. Instructions easy to read and a little muscle not to bad putting together. Just make sure you have room to work around.
