Detail: I'll start by saying I've put together a lot of Billy bookcases and filing cabinets, to say nothing of a big Galant desk that I've taken apart and put back together several times since 2008 as I've moved from place to place.
These shelves don't feel quite as solid as the Billy bookshelves., but not by a big difference. They're holding up to what I've put on them without any problem, and they don't feel like they're about to fall down at all. Unlike the Billy ones, I have not loaded these up with books.
I had no problem putting the pieces together, including the back panel. Everything fit together as expected, and the cam nuts presented no issue, even if now plastic. While not having one shelf locked into place with cam nuts does lessen the strength, it offers more flexibility in how you arrange the shelves. Sturdiness comes instead from shelf pins for two shelves that screw into place on the sides and have tabs to catch the shelf
Shame on IkeaLauraI just spent a small fortune on four cabinets and drawers. Started assembling the first cabinet only to see that the cam nuts that use to be metal are now plastic. No wonder everyone is saying the cabinets fall apart. Now I can't decide if I want to haul all 500 lbs back to the store or soldier on. So disappointing. Cutting corners to save a few cents a unit to undermine the strength of your entire product. Ikea should be ashamed. Wish I had read the reviews of the BESTA system before purchasing.
Love how lightweight this is, added castersJenUse this for my dog’s closet. Put in three rods in the middle for dog harness/clothing. Two rods on the edge holes. One for collars, one for leashes. I purchased my own wheels from Amazon and I literally rearrange my room often and it’s easy to maneuver. I’ve had this for about 4 years multiple moves around my room. It’s held up well. I didn’t use a door. I plan on getting another Besta now. =)
collapsed immediatelyLauraBack panel did not fit correctly into the slots due to the side panels bowing outward. No mechanism to secure the side panels to the interior shelves except some the shelf pins. The shelves imploded within minutes of putting books on them. The unit was standing level on a hard floor when this occurred. I’ve assembled a lot of furniture in my life and never seen this happen before. Based on our experience, I can’t recommend this product.
