Back to college tips for creating a stylish, organized home away from home

If there’s one word used to describe your college living space, it’s multifunctional. Studying, sleeping, eating, entertaining, relaxing, displaying, storing – it’ll all be happening in the same space. Chances are your dorm or college apartment will also be small, so a lot will be going down in just a little space, too!

When in doubt, zone it out. You can organize your college apartment into different zones, each one focused on a different activity. Here are some tips for designing and decorating zones designated for entertaining, studying, showcasing collectibles and storing clothes, along with some quick tips on customization and personalization.

Study to play, and back again

Maintaining a comfortable and organized work area is essential. You’ll want plenty of desk space so you can spread out your assignments and projects, and smart storage or shelving so you can keep all your important items organized and ready to go. When work is over and play time begins, create a flexible entertainment zone with a small seating cluster (and have other easy to grab seats nearby) where friends can lounge. Since space is tight, and you’ll most likely be working, entertaining and sleeping in the same room, a curtain is an easy way to divide your space and create a visual barrier that makes logging off smoother.

Storage to showcasing, all in one

Two birds, one stone. In this case, the two birds are storing and showcasing – the stone is IVAR shelving. Use an IVAR shelf to organize and display a sneaker collection (or whatever you love) with customized lighting to really make it pop. It can be also used to store any of your collectibles, from toys and art to pottery and comic books. Whatever you have, we have a shelf to help you make it look fantastic and clutter-free.

Next up, closet storage. When space is limited, go vertical. Organizing upwards can help maximize space so you can fit everything from shoes and accessories to jackets and folded items. A combination of shelving, hangers and various bins and organizers will allow you to stay organized and easily find your fave looks.

When it comes to classic clothes storage, you can’t beat a solid wood dresser for durability and style. But speaking of style, how can you take a basic looking piece of furniture and elevate it? Great question, you’ve clearly done your homework…
