Are couches and sofas the same thing?

"Sofa" and "couch" are commonly used terms for similar pieces of furniture, but they have subtle differences. The word "sofa" has its origins in the Arabic "suffah," suggesting a more formal and elegant furniture piece, often larger in size and with a uniform design in terms of back and arm height. Sofas are typically associated with formal living spaces and are designed to comfortably seat several people, often featuring ornate and decorative elements.

On the other hand, "couch" comes from the French word "coucher," meaning "to lie down." This term implies a more casual and relaxed furniture piece, possibly smaller in size, and occasionally with one or no arms. Couches are often seen as informal, ideal for lounging or family rooms, and may offer a more relaxed seating experience.

Festive occasions and family gatherings call for extra seats, but your existing sofa can only provide limited seating for a number of people.
