Bed buying guide
So you’ve found our quick guide on what to consider when buying a bed! Now, let's start by thinking about the size that best fits your room and who will be using it to ensure you choose the best mattress that matches your needs. You'll be glad to know that most IKEA bed frames come in various sizes (and heights!), which typically sleep one (single size) or two (queen and king size or bunk).

2. What to consider for bed structure
Buying a bed for the first time? Always check the product details for midbeams and bed slats. Here are some tips for IKEA beds:
- For most queen & king beds, you will need a steel SKORVA midbeam to stabilise the frame and keep the mattress in place. It’s usually included in the price but may be packaged separately.
- Most single, queen & king bed frames require bed slats for mattress support. Standard LURÖY slatted bed bases are typically included but might be packaged separately.
- Divan and wooden base spring mattresses have integrated slats, so you don’t need to buy them separately.
3. Choosing a mattress
When picking a mattress, size and comfort are the most important aspects to consider. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Ensure the mattress size matches your bed frame. Remember to check product measurements for length and width when purchasing.
- Mattress thickness is a matter of preference, but a bed can look off-balance if the mattress is too thick or thin. Thus, you should consider how much of the mattress will be visible with your headboard, footboard, or mattress base.
- Consider the overall height of your bed from the floor to the top of the mattress. It should be easy for you to get in and out of bed.
- Divan beds and wooden base spring mattresses come with mattresses, but you can choose the firmness and size.

4. How to take care of your bed
Investing in a good bed and taking care of it respects the time, energy, and money you’ve spent — so make it worthwhile. Always choose a bed that will last and provide the quality sleep you need - these are some things you should not compromise on!
- Use a mattress protector, it extends the life of your mattress while keeping it clean. Some are waterproof and all are removable and machine-washable (we recommend washing monthly).
- Wash removable covers on upholstered bed frames, mattress bases, or mattresses regularly.
- Tighten screws on your bed frame occasionally to maintain its structural integrity.
- If a slat breaks or a bracket goes missing, you can easily replace damaged or lost parts. Learn about IKEA spare parts service.
