Safety tips for cribs
The finer details of safety standards for cribs vary regionally. However, the basic tips to follow are that:
- The crib should be manufactured with adherence to the local rules for crib safety
- The crib should be sturdy and well made
- There should be a firm and tight-fitting mattress so that the child cannot get trapped between the crib and the mattress
- Use a fitted sheet designed for crib use
- There should be no more than 2 3/8th of an inch between the crib slats so that the child cannot get his/her head stuck in between them
- No corner posts above 1/16th of an inch to avoid catching the baby’s clothing
- No headboard or footboard cutouts where the baby’s head could get trapped
- No loose or poorly installed brackets, screw or other hardware in the crib. A crib should be properly installed with no missing hardware or slats
- Do not place stuffed toys, blankets, bumpers, pillows and pillow-like objects with a young baby in a crib
- Wheeled cribs should have locks on the wheels
Selecting a crib
A crib should be made with the best and safest materials while adhering to the safety standards for cribs. The crib should be properly assembled and there should be no missing parts or loose hardware. A painted crib should use safe paints and the paint should not be peeling. A well-ventilated base keeps the crib comfortable and airy. A crib that allows the mattress to be lowered will be usable for longer.
How long can a child use a crib?
A child can use a crib depending on the design of the crib. A crib that allows you to lower the mattress will be usable for a longer period as your baby grows into a toddler. Some cribs allow you to remove a slatted side when your child grows old enough to be able to get into bed by himself/herself. The manufacturer will specify the age range for a crib.
Selecting a crib mattress
It is very important that the mattress that you buy is designed for and properly sized for your crib. There should be no gaps between the crib and the mattress. A mattress that is used in a crib should also be very easy to care for. A mattress with an outer cover that can be easily laundered in hot water makes it easier to keep the mattress fresh and clean. The mattress should also have an inner cover to contain and secure the mattress contents. A concealed zipper makes it harder for curious children to unzip the cover. Using a mattress protector keeps the mattress safe from accidents. A mattress protector should be breathable and easy to wash. It should also fit securely on the mattress without slipping off.
Where do you place a crib?
A crib should not be placed near a window or electrical wires and sockets. It should also be placed away from anything that could fall into the crib. Place a crib against a wall. Do be aware that if the wall adjoins a toilet or any other noisy room, the sounds could disturb a sleeping baby.
