Reviews

Chair is great, very difficult to assembleAnonymous reviewerReally like the chair and seems to be good quality, no complaints on that front. However, was very difficult to fit the wings when building it. Had to apply so much pressure to get them flush that I was worried I would break it. I've built a lot of furniture in the past, and this was the biggest issue I've ever come across. This is a very common problem when I looked for tips. Frustrating as it's purely a design flaw of the fittings that is the cause and reports go back years. Just worth considering if you're building this on your own, or not very confident in assembly. I'm unable to rate the ease of assembly/installation (the site literally does not give me the option) despite it being listed as a metric in the ratings. I suspect this has been removed intentionally because there's not a chance it would have an average score of 4.3/54
Comfortable sturdy chairAnonymous reviewerEasy to keep clean. Easy enough to put together. Good height chair for everyone.5
The dark green tallmyra material picks up every spec of dust.Anonymous reviewerThis is my third purchase of a Strandmon chair and this is the first one I’ve had issue with. I bought the dark green tallmyra version and that was a mistake. The material is quite a rough, textured chenille and it literally acts like a magnet to every piece of dust and hair in the house. I do a lot of knitting and crafting and even the tiny fibres from the yarns end up all over the chair. In the end I was keeping a lint removing brush down by the side of the chair and brushing it several times a day, but even then, it was still covered in “bits”. Within a week the chair was looking old and scruffy, so I purchased a dark green smooth velvet chair cover to go over the top and this did the trick. I’m now happy with the chair, but it seems a shame to have had to put a cover on a brand new chair for it to look nice.3
Very comfortable.Anonymous reviewerThe armchair was easy to assemble by one person. Very comfortable.5
Difficult assemblyAnonymous reviewerThe chair is of a good standard. Very comfortable. But the assembly starts off easy, then gets really tricky. Unless you are used to working with your hands & with tools be careful. I would've paid to have it assembled knowing what I know now.3
Strandmon chairAnonymous reviewerHaving purchased and put together lots of IKEA furniture for our new home. I found this the most troublesome piece of furniture to assemble. The chair wings would not go on, it was as if the material was stopping engagement of the pins. I watched a YouTube video for tips but this step was missed out (I wonder why) I eventually got them to fit by machining some chamfers into the engagement slots. Looking online this problem is really common and should be solved by now. The first time we have been really disappointed with the assembly process. The chair itself is fine once together.3
Great chairAnonymous reviewerVery supportive and comfy. Looks great, a classic style. Other reviews said it was a little difficult to assemble but my son done it with no problems. Highly recommended.5
Comfy but a nightmare to put together! Once done, it's a really nice chair.Anonymous reviewerLove the colour. Extremely comfortable but had to get handyperson to build for me. I'm always 100% confident I can build IKEA furniture, I've never been defeated, it's always fabulously easy. The arm attachments need redesigning as it should not be this difficult!3
What a struggle !Anonymous reviewerLovely comfortable chair….quite pleased once assemble. Absolute nightmare to put together lining up the sides and bolt holes….4
Practical and comfortableAnonymous reviewerThis chair is really good for your back which was the reason I bought it for my friend that just had babies.... There was a slight glitch but IKEA sorted it out(good customer service)5
Looks lovely, but not that comfortableAnonymous reviewerRecently purchased a couple of these armchairs, once they were put together they looked great. Just what I wanted, but unfortunately the chair seems very firm to sit on. Hopefully the seat pad may get softer!4
Great comfortable chair Anonymous reviewerWe love this chair. Its really comfortable and the green fabric we chose is great and hard wearing 5
Comfortable chair Anonymous reviewerVery comfortable chair of good quality however it is a little difficult to assemble but worth the effort 5
Stands the test of timeAnonymous reviewerI have had this chair for over 10 years and it's been through two house moves and still looks great! The only reason I'm now possibly having to buy a new one is that the padding on the seat and the back needs redoing and because the chair is such good value, quotes for getting it re-stuffed are coming to more than buying a new one. If IKEA was looking for a way to become more sustainable, selling replacement seat cushions and a way to restuff the back of the chair would be amazing because there is nothing else wrong with this seat.5
Good chairAnonymous reviewerComfy, stylish and solid chair that I often find myself dozing off in of late. Really good buy.5
Chair to fall asleep inAnonymous reviewerComfortable armchair, easy to fall asleep in, perhaps just a little low for us, which may prove difficult in years to come, perhaps the legs could be replaced for taller ones?4
Comfortable and good valueAnonymous reviewerAs above4
Bad padding on armrest Anonymous reviewer"I recently purchased a sofa, and while it has a stylish design, I'm really dissatisfied with the armrest padding. The padding feels too thin and doesn’t provide adequate support. What's worse, when I lean on the armrests, I can actually feel the hard wood pieces in the corners, which makes it quite uncomfortable. The sharpness of the wood is noticeable, and it causes discomfort after even a short period of use. It really detracts from the overall comfort and makes relaxing on the sofa difficult." -wingchair tallmyra darkgreen2
Great purchaseAnonymous reviewerI bought this chair as it is a compact design but not too small to be comfortable and it looks so stylish 5
Nightmare to constructAnonymous reviewerLooks nice enough but quality of upholstery underneath is appalling . Corduroy is fraying and staples are barely holding it . Too much hassle to complain and return , I intend to put some proper upholstery tacks into the bottom . Absolute nightmare to assemble - took more time than 2 sofas ! Needed brute force . It’s proved a popular addition to our seating but the quality really isn’t that great. Also if you’re buying dark green make sure you have a lint roller 🙄2

From vintage sitting to modern life

Do you sometimes get a little nostalgic? We do. That’s why we created STRANDMON wing chair. Its design is inspired by an IKEA chair from the 50’s called MK – a favourite of the IKEA founder, Ingvar Kamprad. It was even on the cover of our first catalogue. But how could it be refreshed and adapted to today’s demands? Well, we found a few ways…

Like the quality. Back in the 50’s, most people used chairs just to sit in. Nowadays, we curl up in our chairs, drape our legs over armrests and eat where we sit. We put higher demands on our furniture. Our product developer Ulf Engström explains what STRANDMON has to put up with. “It’s tested to make sure it can take a person that sits and gets up at least 50,000 times. That’s the same as sitting and getting up once a day for 136 years.”

Now in bits and pieces

The aim was to create a comfortable and high quality chair that was a real bargain. For example, Ulf and his colleagues decided to put it in a flat pack. “It has made it possible to have a lower price and reduce emissions during transportation, explains Ulf. The flat pack will also make bringing home STRANDMON a whole lot easier, especially for everyone who doesn’t have a car that can fit a pre-assembled wing chair.

Some things never change

The wing chair perhaps had its golden era long ago, but who knows, it might be considered a must-have in people's homes once again. “People have changed the way they live since the 50's, but the need for affordable quality furniture is still the same. I think that is one of the reasons to why STRANDMON is so popular,” says Ulf. The flat pack and the lower price, together with new colours and patterns, will definitely make it easier for more people to find the right spot for STRANDMON in their home. And – of course – experience some well-deserved comfort.

Material

What is cotton?

Cotton is one of the world's most appreciated and used natural fibres. Textiles in cotton are soft, hardwearing and can be washed at high temperatures. They are also good at breathing and absorbing moisture – making them pleasant to wear close to the body. Today at IKEA we use more and more recycled cotton and strive to make sure that all the new cotton we use has been grown and produced with less and less amounts of pesticides, fertilisers and water.
