How to care for your STRELITZIA

The care level

When choosing your plant pay attention to your lifestyle and the care level of that plant. Some might need a little more care than others. But they all have a chance to grow and thrive in your home.

Let's get to know STRELITZIA,  or better know as the Bird of paradise

The Bird of paradise name comes from it's unusual flowers that resemble forest birds in colour and shape.  They are native to South Africa, so prefer warm and humid surroundings. This plant can grow large, up to 1-1.5+ metres, with big, paddle- shaped leaves that require adequate surrounding space. Plant tip: Fertilize during the active growth of summer.

Conditions

Place in a bright sunny area. Remove dust from it's leaves every now and again to allow it to get as much light as possible. The stronger afternoon sun may harm the leaves.

Watering

The growing medium should be moist, but allow it to dry out a little between waterings.

Minimum temperature 15°C

Bird of paradise plants are sensitive to low temperatures, and tend to like it a little warmer and humid. A spritz of water every few weeks will help.

Location

Birds of paradise are best kept indoors in the UK, but can be moved outdoors during hotter and more humid summers.

Not for consumption

This plant is just for decoration, and should not be consumed.

Recommended pot diameter: 19 - 27cm

As your plant grows it will need some more space, aim for a pot that's 5-7cm larger than the previous pot.
