“After some trials and errors, we came up with the solution. A core of particleboard and a layer of solid wood on the outside – or thick veneer,” says Johnny. “It’s a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern manufacturing methods. Paper-thin veneer has been used in fine, decorative furniture making for centuries, but for our worktops we’re using a much thicker layer of wood.” The thick veneer makes the surface hardwearing, and it saves raw material – a lot of it. From the same amount of wood needed to make one solid worktop, it’s possible to produce five thick veneer worktops.

Holds an enormous amount of kitchen paraphernalia and keeps the room looking tidy. We bought some dividing trays to go into the drawer- this keeps cutlery a bit easier to sort.
We had one tiny error putting it together placing one of the shelves upside down but easily remedied.
I think it will last a long time. Good value for money.

When assembling, be careful with the instructions regarding the strips that go under the shelves - the one under the middle shelf is not the same piece as the one above & below! (instructions a little sparse!) But once up, I love it! And it’s literally one tenth of the price of the same sized island from Wren kitchens!!!
The oak veneer on the top will need sealing properly with some matte varnish to avoid it getting marked & stained, but that’s an easy job.

When we had our kitchen installed a few years back the company tried to sell us an island but we weren’t so sure (plus it would have been too expensive). We’ve had a table in the space for years and when we saw this in store recently we immediately said yes! Ordered online, easily fitted together and it’s now sitting in the kitchen as though it it’s always been there. We just need chairs/stools now.

This has been a great addition to my kitchen as it gave us added counter space, added storage and external seats. Looks great and fits in with modern gloss kitchen units well. Only downside is the colour is a bit ivory than true white as advertised but we don't mind this as still works for us.

Tornviken - I dont know how i coped without oneAnonymous reviewerI am so glad that I decided to get this Kitchen Island. It is very sturdy. Extremely versatile for different activities in the kitchen. Has ample storage underneath which makes the kitchen look tidy because it is entirely hidden from view. It was not the easiest to assemble but persevering with help from 15 yr old daughter I managed in the end. I know I said this before, but it is STURDY. It is the ideal height, although it looks big it does not take up as much room as I thought. It can be easily moved if I change my mind where I want or need it. It is easy to keep clean and clutter free. One factor is that you need to decide on stools to go at the seating side. I went for the Ingolf stools in white and they go pretty well. (Not the highest Ingolf stools 70cm approx, the lower ones 65cm approx). My only concern is that I wish I had got this a lot sooner. It has been invaluable and worth every penny.

Story
Better worktops by using wood smartly
Wood is a precious natural resource. Even though it’s a renewable material it needs to be handled responsibly. One way to do it, is to use the wood more efficiently. That’s what we do with our kitchen worktops in thick wood veneer.
“At IKEA we have a tradition of trying to utilise the materials we have in the best possible way,” says Johnny Rietz, who’s been involved in developing the kitchen worktops in thick veneer. The work started in 2008 when IKEA founder, Ingvar Kamprad, visited one of our suppliers and asked a simple question that took some time to answer: ‘How can we make this product using fewer trees?’
Less is more
No wood is wasted
Another advantage with this production technique is that you can use the whole tree; the stem as surface, and scrap bits – curvy, bent branches and small twigs – for the particleboard on the inside. The end result is a worktop that is every bit as genuine as solid wood, only more stable and more resistant to humidity. “Sometimes a small, harmless question can make a big difference. That’s exactly what happened with our kitchen worktops. It started as a challenge to use resources wiser, and proved to have positive effects not only for the environment, but also the quality. I think it’s great when that happens!” says Johnny.

What is veneer?
A veneer is a thin wooden sheet fixed on things like particleboards to add a durable surface and a natural wood look – so we enjoy the many benefits of wood without using solid wood. The most common veneer types are birch, ash, oak and beech and we’ve made a special UV lacquer that helps preserve the wood's natural structure. A benefit with a slightly thicker veneer is how you can repair and sand the surface if it’s damaged to give furniture a longer and more beautiful life.
