Comfy dinning room chair Anonymous reviewerIt is light but sturdy and very comfortable. 5
XxxAnonymous reviewerDespite other reviews. I found the chairs very easy to put together, apart from the chair backs that require someone strong or with considerable weight to push into position. The chairs are very comfortable and sturdy5

Accessories for SKANSNÄS

SKANSNÄS Chair, light beech

A timeless dining experience

After having designed and produced furniture for more than 70 years, we have some goodies in our archive that can serve as inspiration for new furniture. Sure, everything wasn’t better in the past, especially not comfort and flexibility, so it’s important to base the work on our needs today, just like we have done with the SKANSNÄS series.

The 1950s and 60s were a real golden age in Scandinavian design history. The lines became cleaner and the materials gave character. In our archive, Designer Mikael Axelsson found a real treasure chest of inspiration. “Typical of that time are generous chairs with wide backrests without visible fittings or screws,” tells Mikael. “But they were sold ready-assembled, and the flat pack hadn’t had its breakthrough yet.” Today, our smart wooden plug, the wedge dowel, means you can easily assemble the SKANSNÄS chair. And the plug is invisible from the outside!”

A chair to lean back in

Although many of the chairs in the archive were really comfortable, we wanted to achieve even better comfort. Through trial and error, Mikael and the team searched for the most perfect angle of the backrest and created a seat that is really comfortable to sit on for a long time. “We chose paper cord for the seat since it's strong and gives pleasant suspension when you sit on it.”

For small and large dinner parties

The SKANSNÄS series is made of beech, a hard and durable wood with beautiful graining – just like many of the furniture in the design archive. But, today most of us put higher demands on flexibility. The tables have a so-called butterfly extension. When the house is full of guests, you can easily unfold it and extend the table in a matter of seconds. “SKANSNÄS tables and chairs are made so you can lean back and enjoy small and large dinner parties for many years.” And who knows, maybe they will also become treasures in the archive that inspire future designers.

Designer thoughts

Designer thoughts

"In the work with SKANSNÄS, I did a deep dive into our IKEA archive and drew inspiration from tables and chairs from the 1950s and 60s, which was a golden age for Scandinavian design. I like the simple and soft shapes and the natural materials they used. Materials that are beautiful from the start and develop a nice patina over time. I brought all of that with me, but I also wanted to add new knowledge about ergonomics and techniques to make furniture that suits our time."
