By removing the lower shelf, we made room for higher shoes and boots and made cleaning easier. And saved material!” The shoe shelf that was kept turned out to have savings potential, too. “It was made of a metal sheet with a punched pattern. But now we chose stretch metal which, when stretched, forms a net-like pattern. That adjustment reduced the material used for the shelf by two-thirds.”

Worth the money and not difficult to assembleAnonymous reviewerI had my eye on the Nipasen but not for the previous price. But for £69 I jumped on it. When it came to build it I was confident that it would not be a long job as there’s not a lot of components. I assembled it in 70 minutes - I did slip up once and had one of the big tubes that form the back 180’ so the hole I was supposed to put a screw in was on the other side. But 2 minutes to correct it wasn’t a big problem. I did it on my own but it would be a help to have a second pair of hands when you put the back frame up. The booklet was the usual picture instructions but if you check it all out and lay out all the screws (there are a lot of different screws used) it’s pretty straightforward. So I gave it 5 stars.

The upright tubes have two joints in them and these joints wobble. I’ve securely fastened the unit to the wall at the top, as advised, however those mid-joints let the unit down. I would not recommend the item on this basis, especially if being used in a family context where children will attempt to hang many coats.

In typical Ikea style the Nipasen is self assembly which is easy and straightforward to do, once assembled and filled with our outdoor gear it worked really well, it’s well made and designed and is working really well for us

Product development isn’t only about creating new products. For us at IKEA, it’s just as important to renew and improve the products that are already in the range. With NIPÅSEN coat rack and bench with shoe storage, we succeeded in improving functionality, reducing the amount of material, and lowering the price of smart hallway storage.
This time, the first idea came from one of our suppliers – who are just as convinced as we are that everything can be improved. “They discovered that if one of our coat racks was made a bit narrower, you could use steel pipes with thinner dimensions without losing strength. This meant less material usage and a lower price, which is always great,” says Christos Stefanoudakis, who works with product development.

Smarter storage at a lower price
The style and expression were carried over from the old coat rack, but in the end the updates were so many that it had to become a completely new product: NIPÅSEN. “We managed to make the storage even smarter and more space-saving at a lower price. That feels good, especially as we know that in most parts of the world the hallway is a limited space that needs to hold many things. Making more from less is becoming more and more important – and it’s fun, too!”
