Product details

25 year guarantee. Read about the terms in the guarantee brochure.

The worktop is made of particle board covered with a top layer of veneer. This method allows us to use less wood in production.

Worktop with a thick oak veneer, a hardwearing natural material that can be sanded and surface treated when required.

Oak is an exceedingly strong and durable hardwood with a prominent grain. It darkens beautifully with age acquiring a golden-brown undertone.

Every worktop is unique, with varying grain pattern and natural colour shifts that are part of the charm of wood.

For quick installation and easy maintenance the worktop is pre-treated with hard wax oil.

The worktop has a narrow stave design that gives it a timeless and versatile look that complements both modern and traditional kitchens.

You can cut the worktop to the length you want and cover the edges with the included edging strip.

Care

Do not place a toaster, coffee maker, kettle or other kitchen appliances that emit heat directly over a seam between two worktops because the heat can damage the seam.

Areas where the worktop may dry out, such as edges and areas around the sink and hob, require frequent treatment.

The worktop surface is pre-treated at the factory with hard wax oil. Due to the nature of the material, treat the edges and cut-outs with wood treatment oil, prior to installation.

To ensure that your worktop ages gracefully, treat it regularly with wood treatment oil; it gives the surface a beautiful sheen, protects the wood and prolongs the life of the worktop.

Even though thick veneer is a durable material you should never place hot pots or pans directly on the worktop without a trivet or pot stand.

Never use a steel scourer, scourer pad, souring agent or similar products as they can scratch the surface.

Worktops in laminate or thick veneer that are installed above a dishwasher or oven shall be protected on the underside with FENSJÖ diffusion barrier.

Safety and compliance

Supporting legs are required when an overhang exceeds 25 cm. The maximum distance between these legs should not be more than 80 cm.

Reviews

karlbyAnonymous reviewerDon’t have a great experience. Bought for new ikea kitchen and very regretted: too delicate, even gentle touch leaves marks. We did not use it yet, just set and have so many defects. It’s not cheap. Please avoid if can. We like only colour of it. 2
Lovely work surface, but...Anonymous reviewerThis is a real wood veneer over chipboard. The veneer is very thick (3mm) and so can be sanded and small dings can be repaired over its life. The chipboard base means it's not going to warp (but can bend slowly so needs support). I used this to make a large work desk and I am very pleased with the result. I would not recommend using this as a kitchen work top as it is way too soft and will scrape and mark a lot. The packaging is completely inadequate. There is no foam protection around the edges so imagine a thin bit of cardboard protecting the real wood edges. I had this delivered and so it was put in the back of a van and one edge of it was dented all over. It was easier to turn it around and use the remaining good edge rather than returning to Ikea and getting the and no doubt dented replacement. You need to have a vehicle large enough to collect this yourself and handle it gently. Ikea need to look into the packaging - I would have gladly paid an extra £10 for better packaging.5
don’t buy for kitchen worktop. Anonymous reviewerLooks nice, but very soft and every touch is showing (scratches can’t be removed by using fine sandpaper). we’ve just installed it and I very upset about how difficult is to look after it. try to avoid, don’t buy for kitchen! Our mistake we didn’t read the reviews and rely on ikea kitchen advisor. 1
Do not buy - cheap.Anonymous reviewerWe decided to spend more on the wood worktop but realise our mistake. We have had it for 6 weeks and since installation we have noticed that the joints between sections of the worktop have not been properly sealed. Water is able to seep into the joints during use, which will lead to swelling/ deterioration/ rot of the wood over time. This issue is not present next to a cut in the worktop, where the wood has been correctly sealed. This suggests that the problem is isolated to the joints themselves and is not due to misuse or general exposure to water, but an issue with how the joints were sealed during manufacture. A kitchen worktop should be fit for purpose and able to withstand everyday exposure to water. Despite being new, the worktop does not meet this standard. This is a defect rather than normal wear and tear. We asked for IKEA’s assistance in resolving this matter and they told us you need to provide regular oil treatment (surely not 6 weeks from NEW?) Disappointing.1
Good looking but not waterproofAnonymous reviewerLooks amazing in our new kitchen (5 months old) but already has water damage seeping into the joint and delaminated slightly pushing the veneer upwards causing a bump to the edge. Couple of other water stain / rot (where its gone darker). Wish I had known that this was not complete solid wood and made of chipboard underneath as the water has expanded in the chipboard (wouldn't have this exact issue if all solid wood) and to make matters worse its on the custom made to measure part of the worktop - the biggest piece. Have ChatGPT'd resolutions but unfortunately can't undo the damage due to the material. Disappointed but have learnt my lesson. 2
Karlby - Desk HackAnonymous reviewerI used the Karlby worktop for creating a electric standing desk, the finish on the walnut version is brilliant, absolutely love it!5
Top of the pots!Anonymous reviewerI got the worktop at a reduced amount in the Market place. £99 instead of £249! My refurbished utility room looks amazing with these worktops. I bought two. Excellent quality and good looks.5
Karlby desk/ kitchen topAnonymous reviewerDo Not Buy This. I ordered this and it arrived damaged. Something had pushed through the box and into the top. Very cheaply made for an expensive price. Customer service not interested as they have my money now. Go on line and buy solid wood one for £5 more. Looks amazing in comparison to the ikea one. After 16 days still waiting for my money back, which will be an e voucher and lost £50 delivery. Shame on you Ikea1
Worktop Issues.Anonymous reviewerThe self adhesive veneer strips become detached after applying oil due to adhesive failure. Oil used Trixig. One worktop had a slight curve over its width.3
Good size and colour, yet the quality is Inconsistent. Seemingly not new/refurbished and harsh feeling surface. Anonymous reviewerI have now had this product delivered twice after reading multiple good reviews. It seems a good size and nice colour. The edging strips are much lighter colours than the worktop. 1st delivery. The worktop had seemingly either been used before or had been refurbished with multiple dents, cuts and scratches on the surface. I raised this with the help chat and received a replacement within a week.. although no refund for the £40 delivery fee was given. 2nd delivery. A replacement was delivered smoothly and the delivery teams were great, although they scuffed a wall and I had to wait in all day for separate pick up and drop off teams. This worktop has seemingly not been pre-treated as described. It is rough to touch and in its current form is not suitable as a worktop or desktop. I will update this review once I have had a fit for purpose product.1
Veneered on chipboard Anonymous reviewerWe were shocked after cutting to discover it’s actually veneered chipboard that’s we thought it’s veneered on solid wood. Description is unclear and it’s 100% NOT water resistant, paid extra money for getting a cheap chipboard worktops.1
Not fit for purposeAnonymous reviewerPurchased these worktops around 2 years ago and the quality of this product is absolutely atrocious. The worktops are now in a state in which for two years, is appalling but according to customer support, acceptable. I would be very careful when purchasing this item and would advise anyone to look into particular oiling requirements of the worktops. Even though Ikea do not outline on how often to oil your worktops; should there be a problem, however often you’ve oiled them will not be enough. Save yourself the time money and effort from buying this subpar item, spend a bit extra money and purchase a quality product from elsewhere and fit it at your own expense. 1
Would not recommend!Anonymous reviewerThe Karlby worktop is not great for kitchen use. My worktop started to have water seep through from the start but I never complained to Ikea, and now severely damaged after 6 years. Will no way last up to 25 years!1
Bending Anonymous reviewerUsed a few of these over the years as a desk. This one has started to warp/bend unfortunately. Usually a great product, so much so we have 3 in our home and the other 2 are perfect. 1
KarlbyAnonymous reviewerExcellent 5
Looks great but not very hard wearing Anonymous reviewerEasily dented & scratched. When contacting IKEA they don’t want to know. 1
Looks great but fragile.Anonymous reviewerUsing as a study desk but scratches and dents are appearing with normal use. I don't think this would be at all suitable for a kitchen, where the wear will be much greater.3
Not goodAnonymous reviewerIts very nice but the fitters made a mess of it when fitting it1
Just the TicketAnonymous reviewerBought for a desk top. Fitted the space perfectly. No cutting required. Nice and firm. No flexing. Very good finish. Nothing else to say m5
Solid Desk TopAnonymous reviewerUsed to make a desk as working from home. Solid feeling, with lots of surface space.5

What is veneer?

A veneer is a thin wooden sheet fixed on things like particleboards to add a durable surface and a natural wood look – so we enjoy the many benefits of wood without using solid wood. The most common veneer types are birch, ash, oak and beech and we’ve made a special UV lacquer that helps preserve the wood's natural structure. A benefit with a slightly thicker veneer is how you can repair and sand the surface if it’s damaged to give furniture a longer and more beautiful life.
