To find out how to best help people with issues like this, Paul and his colleagues visited different homes on three continents. They took pictures and bombarded the homeowners with storage-related questions. “We got to see the hard truth, and it wasn’t always pretty,” smiles Paul. “Many have closets with just a shelf and a rail underneath. It’s simple, but not very functional. They stuff the shelf and hang as much as they can on the rail – the rest ends up on the floor.”

It’s not 70cm in height once assembled!Anonymous reviewerI looked at the reviews before I went to ikea for this, which were very helpful. Easy to assemble, you can tell from the sides which is top and bottom. Theres a grey piece for you to use with the hammer for the corners and yes it’s noisy but quick enough. My biggest take away is that it doesn’t stand at 70cm height once assembled! The little screws you have to put in the bottom add another few mm to the unit so if, like me, you were trying to get it under your desk alongside the Alex drawers which are 70cm high, you’re in for a rude awakening.

No top, limited space, difficult assemblyAnonymous reviewerIt's easy to get caught out with assembling this the wrong way around and once you've got the pieces together it's permanent. I'm disappointed that this size does not come with a lid. Lastly, the drawers that come with have a funny angle meaning you can't fit as much stuff in. So all an all not very easy, not very modular, not very space saving.

However, there's not much you can fit in those drawers and they also lose space by the angle of it. I wish the drawers had more height or more options. It also doesn't have the top shelf option as an add-on.

Very neat, but difficult assemblyAnonymous reviewerHaving the frame pre-assembled is very useful. The only assembly required is hitting the top and bottom pieces (the handle parts) into the legs to create the frame. This is a bit difficult for someone without much strength, and very noisy as the item is made of metal. Also, as the thing you are hitting into the leg is made of ribbed plastic, it fires out shards of plastic as you hit it in. A little bit dangerous for my liking. I'd definitely recommend going for the mesh baskets over the wire ones. I um'd and ah'd about it endlessly in the store, touching one, then the other, and eventually picked the mesh option as it allows for the storage of finer materials (thread, pens, beads) and has corners. I don't know why they decided to leave corners out from the wire baskets, but thankfully the mesh option has them included. The frame itself is neat, and the addition of the top shelf is a useful aspect. The nature of the product being metal is cheap and cheerful. A neat addition to my room, and enough storage for paints, drawing materials, sewing materials and room to expand my crafts :)
