not what it used to beVerified ReviewerI'll start with saying I'm a massive fan of the ivar system,I have it both in my bedroom as a wardrobe and in my workshop for storage. the older model I have is definitely superior in build quality. I now have three different variations. the first has the metal rail encased in wood to hold it in place, the other has plastic rails and the newest has gone back to metal rails, but they are not secured in place like the used to be. This I may add is a terrible design flaw, the rails on most my recent shelves arrived wonkily positioned and loose. any time you remove a shelf they come out. this poor manufacturing is not just the shelves. my uprights were not drilled centrally and so the shelves wouldn't fit and another, either the wood of the shelf was cut wrong or the side upright as it got wedged when getting it in place. I really hope they'll look into the current quality of manufacture. it's a great system but I will not be buying any more new pieces, I'll be looking for the old.3
Don't buy such rubbishVerified ReviewerVery misleading photos and planner, as I thought the shelves would be simple to re-position. Don’t you believe it! The shelves have a totally Heath Robinson design – anyone with any basic engineering skills would know these would not work. First, there is a metal strip – like a U-channel with a lip – under the two sides of the shelf. The U-channels are not smooth but have protrusions which are supposed to hold the dowels in. The shelf has a very shallow slit in the wood which the U-channels push into. They very easily become dislodged as there is no glue or anything holding the channels in. They arrive with two metal dowels in the channels on each side. One shelf arrived with a dowel missing and we had to order another entire shelf. These dowels happen to be of a smaller diameter than the holes in the uprights which means they are very loose. The only way to move a shelf once in position is to give it an almighty whack underneath with a mallet. Then the loose dowels fall out!1
Really poor quality fixingsVerified ReviewerBeen buying IVAR system for over 30 years, and have an awful lot of it! Lot of changes over time, far less available in the range now which is sad. Original range was fab, well made and sturdy and still going strong. Didn't like when the edges of the shelf were grey plastic, looked odd and not as sturdy but worked ok. But have just bought some new shelves and the new fitting is awful. The metal strip at the edge of the shelf isn't attached to the wood securely. It first came off when I was trying to get the shelf supports out and continued to fall off every time I moved the shelf. Have had to scrabble about at the back of the unit to retrieve the metal strip several times. Doesn't hold the unit together at all, which the shelves used to. Even with the cross brace in place, any pressure at all sideways and the shelf parts company from the upright. Come on IKEA these are not fit for purpose 😩1
Excellent storage system, easy to assemble and can be added to at anytim.Verified ReviewerWe have kitted out a 2.5m x 3.5m pantry with this shelving system and it looks absolutely amazing. Being able to mix & match sizes and the height of individual shelves coupled with a wine/bottle rack shelving option is just great! We applied a wood oil with a tint and what a difference that has made! It does require a little more work but its so worth the effort to transform the pine into a very expensive looking shelving system. Definitely recommend. We have had so many compliments on the shelving system it’s so good. The biggest issue with adopting this system is the availability of the shelves! But, definitely worth the wait. Best thing about this system is that you can just keep adding to it!5

DISAPPOINTEDVerified ReviewerOrdered 10 of these for delivery. At least 5 were dirty/damaged. They DO NOT come in protective cardboard packaging like many of Ikeas products. I had to spend MY time & energy sanding them to remove marks! VERY DISAPPOINTED!1

Ivar ShelvesVerified ReviewerThese shelves are brilliant. So adaptable to fit an awkward space. Love them.5
Ivar shelving unitVerified ReviewerBought this unit a couple of years ago and loved it so when needing additional shelving, didn't hesitate. Sadly the shelves have been designed slight different. They are cheaply made with the silver brackets coming loose. I had to refix 3 to use them2
Lugs...Verified ReviewerNot sure what else to call them, but the metal pegs that are used to support the shelf in the IVAR frame. Screwdriver required to remove the lugs from the metal support strip - be careful, strip is sharp. I quite like how the lugs are 'locked in' now when installing - it keeps things a bit more stable when constructing. Re-positioning requires a firm thump underneath to 'unlock', however doing this with two of my shelfs (one a 42x50) resulted in the metal strip coming out.4
Adding to an older pair of Ivar shelvesVerified ReviewerWe had a pair of Ivar shelves, which I bought about 7 years ago, but needed extras, so I bought another set of shelves to go between. They match up perfectly.5
Good quality for priceVerified ReviewerGood quality for price5
Brilliant systemVerified ReviewerJust bought an extra shelf after rearranging my craft/hobby room.5
GoodVerified ReviewerGood solid design works well. Good value5
Perfect place to put stuffVerified ReviewerThis shelf has been invaluable in helping me to put stuff on a shelf. I needed something simple, not anything too complex or fancy, just a plain old shelf, and this fits the bill 100%. It was easy to carry - in fact I am pretty sure I carried about 5 of them, so some of the shelves were fulfilling their purpose before I even got them home, by allowing me to store the other shelves on top of them - kind of a recurring shelf situation, if you see what I mean. I certainly will be buying more of these, not just because it was easy to buy - I genuinely just had to get my wallet out and exchange money at the till, then leave with the shelf (shelves, remember) - but also because I have, if you can believe, more stuff. Honestly, if you have stuff, and you want to put that stuff *on* something, I highly recommend this. You should buy the side structure, so that you can hook it onto that and place it, say, at face level, like I did, so I can see my stuff. But you don't have to do that. I could certainly have placed this shelf on the floor, on my lap, and on many several other things. I just chose to put it in the structure. It snapped in really easily! I have had this item for about a month now, and it continues to hold the stuff really well. The design is genius in its simplicity. If everything else in my life worked so well, it would be a very different world.5
Customisable, no packaging, quality and effectiveVerified ReviewerVery customizable as each part is separate, making it ideal to build to suit the space you have. Reasonably priced and good quality. Doesn't come with any packaging which is amazing, so even better if your concerned about waste, literally comes it as it is with a barcode sticker and a small bag of screws etc taped on. Worked perfect building a little pantry under the stairs5

Our take on wood

Wood is the material most commonly associated with IKEA furniture, and for good reasons. It’s renewable, recyclable, durable, ages beautifully and it is an important part of our Scandinavian design heritage. At IKEA we believe that sourced in responsible way, wood is a key change driver for climate mitigation. In 2012, we set a goal that by 2020 our wood would be from more sustainable sources. We are happy to announce that we have reached this goal and today, more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

Forests are critical for life on earth

Forests contribute to maintaining balance in the atmosphere, purify the air that we breathe and are part of the water cycle. They nourish wildlife biodiversity and provide homes for indigenous communities who depend on forests for their livelihoods. 90% of plant and animal species living on the planet need forests to survive. They provide sources of food, fuel, timber and many other ecosystem services that we rely upon. Sourcing approximately 19 million m3 of roundwood per year from some 50 countries, IKEA has a significant impact on the world’s forests and the timber industry and a huge responsibility to positively influence how wood is sourced. Responsible wood sourcing and forest management ensure that the needs of people dependent on forests are met, that businesses can work sustainably, that forest ecosystems are protected and biodiversity is enhanced.

100% wood from more sustainable sources

At IKEA, we work with strict industry standards to promote responsible forestry. We don’t allow any wood in our supply chain from forest areas that are illegal or contain high conservation values or from forest areas with social conflict. Before starting to work with IKEA, suppliers must demonstrate that they meet IKEA critical requirements on wood sourcing. IKEA requires all suppliers to source wood from more sustainable sources (FSC-certified or recycled wood). All suppliers are audited regularly and non-compliant suppliers are required to implement immediate corrective actions. By working together with our suppliers, we are proud to announce that we have reached our more sustainable sources goal, which we set out to achieve by 2020. Today more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030

As pressure on the world’s forests and the surrounding eco-systems increases due to unsustainable agriculture, the expansion of infrastructure and illegal logging, it is time to take an even more holistic approach to protect and support these important resources for generations to come. The IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030 set out to improve forest management, enhance biodiversity, mitigate climate change and support the rights and needs of people who depend on forests across the whole supply chain and drive innovation to use wood in even smarter ways. The agenda focuses on three key areas: • Making responsible forest management the norm across the world. • Halting deforestation and reforesting degraded landscapes. • Driving innovation to use wood in smarter ways by designing all products from the very beginning to be reused, refurbished, remanufactured, and eventually recycled.

We accomplish more by working together

For many years, IKEA has partnered with businesses, governments, social groups and non-governmental organisations to fight forest degradation and deforestation and increase the volume and availability of wood from responsibly managed forests both for our own supply chain and beyond. We are on a journey to improve global forest management and make responsible wood sourcing the industry standard, contributing to building resilient forest landscapes and improve biodiversity.

Material

What is solid wood?

Solid wood is one of our favourite materials and is part of our Scandinavian heritage. It is also a timeless material with many uses. Regardless of the wood species, it is durable, beautiful and renewable. We strive to use this raw material as smartly and efficiently as possible to avoid waste – and we also invest in facilities and logistics so that we can increase the use of recycled wood.
