It is estimated that every five seconds, one BILLY bookcase is sold somewhere in the world. Pretty impressive considering we launched BILLY in 1979. It’s the booklovers choice that never goes out of style.

Perfect fit!Anonymous reviewerThis little extension piece is perfect for taking your shelving that little bit further up. Around the room, we added another two bookcases worth of storage. Very easy to follow and assemble.
A good additionAnonymous reviewerIt's good to be able to add shelves as we add books. But there's a slight difference in dimensions from those I bought previously, so I've had to abandon thoughts of symmetry.
Important extra space for booksAnonymous reviewerExtension units are very helpful when, like us, you have an abundance of books to store. Billy is our go-to simple and clean storage solution.
Takes my Billy up to the ceiling and easy to installAnonymous reviewerWorks as intended. Matches perfectly with the regular depth, tall Billy. Instructions are clear and installation straightforward.
It also fits on top of the deeper 40cm Billy if you don't mind the extension not having the same depth as the rest of the deeper unit.
Nearly very good.Anonymous reviewerI bought two Billy bookshelves and two Billy Extensions. And, indeed, the overall appearance and ease of assembly of the extensions was as expected. However, there should be two holes in the top of the shelf unit for connecting the extension - they were not present on either of my units. I had to try drilling holes myself and I made a bit of a bodge of it. Granted, IKEA Customer Services did offer me replacements, but I could not face the hassle of dis-assembling the units, plus I was on a tight schedule to get the bookshelves in use.
Additionally, in my opinion, there is a small design fault with the extensions. When installed there is an unsightly 2-3 mm gap at the back of the extension where it is supposed to meet the top of the Billy bookcase. Granted, when the shelf is loaded with books, you can’t see the gap. But with a bit more careful design it need not be there.
PerfectAnonymous reviewerBought multiple has needed to expand by bookshelves was easy to assemble and add to bookcase. Great addition for my expanding library of books
Looks and works as advertised butAnonymous reviewerThis unit is dead easy to construct - only 4 parts and the fixings. The panels can be joined the wrong way round so some care is required.
Note however that the unit is fixed atop the Billy bookcase using pin and roundlock fittings - the Billy already has holes for the pins. BUT this is where it got awkward for me - to fit the completed extension unit over the pins you need an extra 7mm or so more than the extension height (35mm). Unfortunately I had only 38 mm between the top of my bookcase and the ceiling so could not use these fixings. The extension does sit on top of the Billy but I had to fix it another way - I used the L-brackets provided for wall safety connection (which the bookcase already had). Less elegant but hidden by the books stored in the extension anyway. Overall a good product, with that one caveat for those with low ceilings :-)
Excellent add on, easy toAnonymous reviewerExcellent add on, easy to put together
Can't give it minus stars.Anonymous reviewerWhen you advertise something as a white unit, it should be white not mostly white with a beige/peach panel, that is not mentioned. Even your own customer service did not know about it. Regardless of whether that panel is invisible or not. It is advertised as a white unit and I'm really not happy. Very unhappy due to the fact of the first one I bought was completely WHITE.

What is particleboard?
Particleboard is made from recycled wood and sawmill leftovers – so wood pieces with the wrong shade, woodchips and sawdust become a resource instead of possibly being discarded. We use boards for things like bookcases, bed frames, sofas and kitchen frames. To protect from wear and moisture, we apply varnish, veneer or foil that adds to the furniture's look.
