Mostly a plank of woodAnonymous reviewerIt's basically just a painted plank of wood. The inside is particleboard and seems quite soft in the middle, but is denser near the top/bottom faces which gives a good attachment for wood screws. I found that pre-drilling screw holes was necessary to keep the supports flush against the wood (making the hole with self tapping screws causes a burr / "mole hill" which pushes the support away). The edges have a nice finish and look like they can take a knock without immediately getting damaged.

heavy, difficult to put upAnonymous reviewerAlthough being really thick and heavy, these shelves are not strong; the 1.2m shelf needs three brackets, meaning 9 holes drilled in exacty the right place, and of course IKEA doesnt supply any screws or rawplugs.

Lovely strong shelfAnonymous reviewerI bought this as part of a kit for some shelves and so far I am super impressed by how sturdy the shelf is. It was actually put in a cupboard to give more storage space up high and was actually drilled into plaster board (using the correct rawlplugs for plaster walls) and they seem super strong. So far I have a stack of board games and filed paperwork on one shelf, so pretty heavy and it’s held perfectly. Keeping the other one I got for my little ones bedroom as they look lovely to display things on too. Definitely recommend!

What is particleboard?
Particleboard is made from recycled wood and sawmill leftovers – so wood pieces with the wrong shade, woodchips and sawdust become a resource instead of possibly being discarded. We use boards for things like bookcases, bed frames, sofas and kitchen frames. To protect from wear and moisture, we apply varnish, veneer or foil that adds to the furniture's look.
