Disappointed Anonymous reviewerI bought my original IKEA solid beech stool 20 years ago as a birthday present for my dad. It was a genuinely solid, well-made wooden stool and he used it constantly in his garage for all those years. It finally collapsed last week after 20 years of use, which, to be fair, is pretty impressive.
I decided to replace it with another one from IKEA for his birthday , expecting the same quality. Unfortunately, the new stool is nothing like the old one.
It claims to be solid beech but it is actually veneered and the timber is around half the thickness of the original. Even the Allen key supplied with it has been designed as cheaply as possible, it isn’t long enough to get a proper grip, so IKEA has added a plastic extension to it.
The difference in quality is unbelievable. My original stool lasted 20 years of constant use; I honestly can’t see this new one lasting anywhere near that long.

It is stable enough for me to sit and rest on when legs have had enough, nice big steps and easily moved with both the handle hole or like me - pushing across the floor!
It’s also the perfect height to pop the laundry basket on while you sort through!
