IKEA launches standout new collection with Finnish design company Marimekko

IKEA is excited to launch a brand-new, limited-edition collection with renowned Finnish lifestyle design company Marimekko. Inspired by sauna culture and its wellbeing benefits - which is deeply rooted in the Nordic lifestyle - the BASTUA collection consists of 26 products ranging from furniture to glassware and textiles.
Available in stores and online from 1st March 2023, the range unites IKEA’s home furnishing knowledge with Marimekko’s art of printmaking and marks the first time that Marimekko has designed a set of prints exclusively for a brand collaboration. The BASTUA collection celebrates the pleasure and joy of self-care rituals to help encourage wellbeing at home. It features bold, striking and vibrant patterns inspired by the large, decorative rhubarb leaves often found growing near sauna huts in Finland.
Robes, towels and a sauna bucket, the latter being a first for IKEA, are items traditionally used when enjoying a sauna, whilst other items in the range are encouraged to be used before or after a sauna ritual. Whether it’s a cushiony soft seat to feel more grounded when enjoying a light meal, or a candle infused with aromas ranging from elderflower, rhubarb and sweet vanilla to evoke a calmer atmosphere, the BASTUA collection encourages customers to take a little piece of Nordic happiness with them, with or without a sauna.
The collection also includes items inspired by Nordic furniture design. The classic side table can be complimented with the coordinated BASTUA trays and glassware to spark Nordic joy in the home. Meanwhile, the bench is perfect for moments of solitude and is both functional and stylish.
Capturing the essence of Marimekko’s Finnish roots and its connection to the historic origins of sauna culture was a fundamental part of the design journey and the creation of the BASTUA prints. Marimekko is committed to bringing joy to the everyday lives of people with its bold prints and designs, and we are excited to see this to come true in collaboration with IKEA.”

The collection name “BASTUA” is a term used to describe sauna in Småland, a region in Southern Sweden where IKEA was founded. Self-care rituals and Nordic saunas were the initial inspiration for the collection, which can be used to help wind down at home after a long day or embraced outdoors during the warm summer months.
“Collaborating with Marimekko was a natural choice for IKEA as we are both committed to enabling a better everyday life at home, and with the BASTUA collection, it begins with focusing on wellness first,” says Henrik Most, Creative Leader at IKEA. “The collaboration encapsulates the sensations of endless summers and the simple and aesthetic beauty of Nordic nature in furniture and accessories for the home.”
“Nordic furniture design has always been characterised by clean lines and simple constructions that focus on function” says Mikael Axelsson, Designer at IKEA. “The BASTUA side table is my take on this heritage as it is made of birch veneer and with a high edge that keeps things in place.”
The BASTUA collection will be available in store and online from 1st March 2023, until stocks last.
