Calculating emissions to understand your starting point

To help limit climate change to 1.5 °C and achieve our goal of becoming climate positive by 2030, we must understand and measure our climate footprint across our entire value chain – so that we can act with impact. Our climate footprint is the measure of the impact on climate change from the greenhouse gas emissions we are responsible for.

Every business is responsible for its greenhouse emissions.

As a business, we have the possibility and the responsibility to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of our own value chain and contribute with further reductions in society.

Based on the GHG Protocol, a company's greenhouse gas emissions are classified and measured across three scopes:

When we look closely we can see where our impacts and opportunities are.

Calculating your company's emissions gives you an overview of where you are and which part of your business produces the most emissions, allowing you to take specific actions to reduce them.

"It wasn’t until we were well into this journey that we realised we weren’t actually tracking our progress. It was a bit like trying to lose weight without stepping on the scales! That’s when we started measuring our carbon footprint. Now, one of our biggest motivators is seeing that progress year after year—and challenging ourselves to beat the previous year’s footprint keeps us pushing forward."

IKEA calculates the climate footprint at each stage of its value chain.

As a global brand meeting many millions of customers around the world every day, we have a big climate footprint, and therefore a big responsibility to reduce it, from how we source raw materials and run our operations, through to the products and services we offer our customers.

By financial year 2030, we are committed to halve absolute GHG across the entire IKEA value chain (scopes 1, 2 and 3) vs FY16, and reaching net-zero emissions by FY50, without relying on carbon offsets to meet this absolute reduction target.
