How do I get the VAT refund?

VAT refunds are possible after your IKEA products have been exported from Germany. Here you will find all the necessary information.

VAT refund for exports within the EU

1. Who can get a VAT refund?
A refund of VAT within the EU is only possible for companies.
2. What documents do you need?
We need the following documents for the refund:
  • Original purchase receipt
  • Copy of your excerpt from the commercial register or your business registration
  • Your VAT ID
  • Written confirmation that the goods have entered the rest of the EU territory (confirmation of arrival)
  • Your bank details (IBAN and BIC)
3. Refund for purchases made in an IKEA store
If you have shopped in the store and received a classic receipt:
  1. Contact the customer service department of the IKEA store where you made your purchase with all the necessary documents.
  2. It is not necessary to convert the receipt into an invoice via the VAT Invoice tool.
  3. The VAT will then be transferred to your account.
4. Refunds for online purchases
If you have shopped online – whether picked up via Click & Collect or received by delivery:
Send all the required documents together with your bank details (IBAN and BIC) to the following address:

The refund will then be transferred to your account.
 

VAT refund for exports outside the European Union

If you export IKEA products to a non-EU country, you can get a refund of the VAT paid under certain conditions. Here you will find all the important information clearly summarized.
1. Requirements for VAT refund
You can get a VAT refund if:
  • the gross amount per receipt is at least €50
  • you export the goods from Germany in non-commercial travel
  • you live outside the EU
Exceptions:
The €50 limit does not apply to:
  • Company
  • NATO Armed Forces
  • Members of diplomatic organizations
2. Export in baggage (e.g.car or plane)
If you are taking the goods personally with you in your luggage:
  • The export must take place by the end of the third calendar month after the purchase at the latest.
  • IKEA works exclusively with Global Blue on this.
  • The colleagues in the IKEA store will explain the process to you and fill out the online form with you.
  • The refund will be made by Global Blue after confirmation of export.
Documents to be sent to Global Blue
Whether you've shopped online or in-store, Global Blue requires:
  • Original proof of purchase
  • Proof of your residence abroad
  • Customs confirmation of export
  • (in the case of freight forwarding, additionally: freight forwarding papers)

3. Export by a freight forwarder to a third country
If the goods are exported by freight forwarder, send to Global Blue:
  • Original proof of purchase
  • Forwarding documents
  • Export confirmation from customs
  • Proof of residence (for private individuals)
Reimbursement will also be made via Global Blue.
4. NATO Forces
If you are a member of the NATO Armed Forces, you will need:
  • Procurement order
  • Settlement certificate
  • Employee ID card (for identification)
Important:
Online purchases are for NATO forces von the VAT refund.
For purchases in stores:
  • go to customer service directly after shopping, or
  • Send documents + IBAN & BIC to the store indicated on your proof of purchase.
The refund will be made directly to your bank account after verification.
5. Diplomatic organizations
If you are a member of a diplomatic mission, you will need:
  • Certificate of exemption from VAT
  • ID card for identification
Procedure depending on the purchase:
Online Purchase
Send the required documents with your bank details (IBAN & BIC) to the IKEA store listed on your invoice.
Shopping in the store
  • go to customer service directly after shopping, or
  • Send documents + bank details to the furniture store named on the invoice.
The refund will be made to your account after verification.
