How to choose and place rugs in your outdoor space

How to turn your terrace into a real living space

Even on a balcony or terrace, a carpet can create a warm, personal atmosphere. Especially on cold, hard stone or concrete floors, a carpet makes all the difference. Always choose a carpet designed specifically for outdoor use, so you can be sure it will withstand rain, sun and snow.

Dining outdoors

A rug under your outdoor dining table brings the whole setup together—and keeps chairs stable. Choose a flat-woven, durable rug that can handle crumbs, spills and sudden rain. Pick a rug at least 60–70 cm larger than the table on all sides so chairs stay on the rug, even when pulled out.

Lounging outside

Relaxing under the sun? A rug defines your lounging area, adds softness under bare feet, and holds furniture in place. Go for UV-resistant, quick-drying rugs that can handle sun, sandals and summer parties. Use a rectangular or round rug large enough to fit all lounge pieces or at least the front legs of each seat.

Outdoor sofas & corners

Create a cozy corner on your patio or balcony with an outdoor rug under your sofa set. A rug visually anchors your seating and protects the flooring underneath. For L-shaped or sectional seating, pick a rug that extends at least 20–30 cm beyond the edges of the sofa footprint.
