Midsummer food: Recipes for a delicious midsummer menu

A midsummer buffet with many delicious midsummer dishes.

Midsummer's Eve is one of the most beloved Swedish holidays, and food plays a central role in the celebrations. But what do people usually eat on Midsummer? What is typical midsummer food? Here's some inspiration for a classic midsummer menu, with a focus on IKEA products that are perfect for a summery midsummer lunch.

No midsummer lunch is complete without herring and salmon

At IKEA you'll find classics such as mustard herring, matjes herring and pickled herring with dill. Serve the herring in pretty glass jars with new potatoes and a dollop of sour cream on the side. Salmon is another traditional dish on the midsummer table. We also have both gravlax and smoked salmon. Make salmon rolls, egg halves with salmon on top or serve as it is on a beautiful platter.

Meatballs - Midsummer food and family favourite

Meatballs may be best known as a Christmas tradition, but they're just as good at Midsummer - for young and old alike. Our HUVUDROLL is a quick and easy addition to the midsummer buffet. Serve with a little parsley on a toothpick, on skewers with freshly harvested potatoes and asparagus, or just as they are with tasty grilled vegetables.

Midsummer dessert with a taste of summer

Summery desserts make your mouth water, and now is the time to serve something sweet on the midsummer table. This is the time of year when the first strawberries of summer ripen, so enjoy them with a cake. Make a classic version, a pancake cake, smaller portions in glasses or why not try a version with waffles? Decorate your midsummer dessert with flowers (or sweets!).

Make your midsummer drink festive

Complement your midsummer menu with traditional drinks like aquavit or schnapps. IKEA offers several refreshing non-alcoholic options such as lingonberry drink and elderberry juice for those who prefer it. To make your midsummer drink a little more festive, serve it with fruit in a variety of glass containers and chargers. And prepare drinking glasses for all your guests.
