We know how important it is that you understand how we use your data. We will always do our best to be transparent. This Privacy Notice describes how and why we collect, store, process and share the personal data you provide to us when you use IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace at https://secondhand.ikea.com (the “IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace”) for the sale and purchase of second-hand IKEA furniture and home furnishing accessories.
This Privacy Notice also explains what your rights are in relation to the personal data we process about you. We respect your right to privacy and are committed to protecting it.
The IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace is only available to IKEA Family members. Read more here about how we process personal data in order to provide you with IKEA Family and the associated account. The terms and conditions that apply to your IKEA Family membership (including your access to the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace) can be found here (“IKEA Family Terms and Conditions”). This Privacy Notice only relates to the processing of your personal data when you use the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace and interact with other users of the platform.

The data controller of Ingka Group under this Privacy Notice is Ingka NB AB, hereinafter the “Controller” or “we”. Ingka NB AB is a Swedish limited liability company registered with the Bolagsverket under number 559487-7051, with its head office at Älmhultsgatan 2, 215 86 Malmö, Sweden. Ingka NB AB operates the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace.

Which personal data do we process and for what purpose?
We process your personal data when you use the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace. We may collect the following types of personal data:
- Information you provide directly to us: this includes your IKEA Family profile (to log in), your published ads including photos, chat messages and reviews, and any other information you provide when using the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace.
- Information we collect automatically: when you interact with us via the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace, we automatically collect certain information such as your IP address, browser software and operating system.
- Information we receive from others: we receive personal data about you from our payment service provider and we may also receive personal data from other IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace users if they rate or review you.
Your personal data is processed for the following purposes:
To identify you as an IKEA Family member and make the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace accessible to you
To access the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace, you must log in with your IKEA Family account. We need to know where you are located in order to show you the correct country and language version of the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace. We will also process your personal data to publish second-hand IKEA products you want to sell, to allow you to browse the platform and to buy second-hand IKEA products from other users.

- Purchase and sales history and transaction ID

We do this to perform our contract (the IKEA Family Terms and Conditions) with you so that we can give you access to the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace.
To enable communication between buyers and sellers
We will process your personal data to make the chat function available and to support communication between sellers and buyers. We apply automated content checks to chat messages to ensure compliance with the IKEA Family Terms and Conditions. For the same reason, we will review your message if another user has reported it as inappropriate. We may also process chat messages where this is necessary to handle an issue covered by Buyer Protection.

We process this personal data to perform our contract (the IKEA Family Terms and Conditions) and because we have a legal obligation to take action where content has been reported as illegal or inappropriate.
To enable ratings and reviews
The IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace allows users to rate and review other users. All ratings and reviews are moderated. When published, both the username of the person posting the review and the username of the person being reviewed are shown.

We process this personal data to perform our contract (the IKEA Family Terms and Conditions).
To enable payment
We will process your personal data to facilitate the payment process, whether you make a payment or receive a payment via bank transfer or a digital IKEA gift card. The payment is processed by an external payment service provider. We share your bank details, billing/shipping address, first and last name, date, time and amount of the purchase, device ID, order ID, payment card details and customer identification data with the payment service provider. If the payment service provider requests this for purposes such as KYC (know-your-customer) checks or fraud prevention, we may also ask you to provide your tax number and official/national identification number.

To provide customer services
We process the data from chat conversations with us on the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace to provide you with customer service. We also use this data to follow up on complaints and to improve the systems and services we offer by gaining insight into system performance and activity.

To personalise your experience on the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace
We personalise your experience on the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace by analysing user activity data to generate customer insights. These insights help us tailor your feed, recommend ads that are relevant to you and present relevant search results.

- Activity data (e.g. purchases, published ads, sold items and searches)
- Notifications
- Location data (to show ads near you)

Legal basis
We will personalise your online experience based on your cookie consent and, where applicable, our legitimate interest in creating an inspiring IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace that is relevant to you.
To report transactions to the tax authorities
We will process your personal data to report your identity to the Swedish Tax Agency (and your local tax authority) if your total turnover and/or number of transactions reaches the threshold set out in the applicable tax legislation (implementation of the DAC7 Directive).

We carry out data analyses at the level of activity on the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace on an aggregated level or use pseudonymised data to monitor and continuously improve our performance.

We have a legitimate interest in analysing this information to improve the customer experience. Your cookie consent is used for your browsing history to support this analysis. We use your personal data to ensure that the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace is a safe place for everyone. This means that we process personal data to protect both you and us against fraud and scams, to keep your payments secure and to ensure that all users comply with the IKEA Family Terms and Conditions that apply to the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace. It also means that we moderate the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace to detect suspicious activity and take action when users report illegal content.

Legal basis
We have a legitimate interest in protecting you and ourselves against misuse of and on the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace, fraud and security risks. In addition, we have a legal obligation as a platform operator to take action when we detect illegal activities on the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace and to retain such information for the period described in the European Digital Services Regulation.
How long do we keep your data?
We keep your personal data for as long as necessary for the purposes described above. When we no longer need your personal data for the intended purpose(s), we delete it or anonymise it so that you can no longer be identified.
In some cases, we keep certain data for a shorter or longer period for business and operational reasons, or because we are legally required to do so.
Who has access to your personal data?
We use external service providers (“Service Providers”) to process your personal data on our behalf, in accordance with the instructions we provide, in strict compliance with applicable law and this Privacy Notice.
Service Providers include:
- Third parties that provide us with digital services so that the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace can function.
- Third parties that help us segment and understand our customers.
- Companies that provide advertising and marketing services.
- Companies that aggregate and/or anonymise clickstream data on our website, in our app and on the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace on our behalf.
Our Service Providers will not transfer your data to other entities without our approval and without a legal basis for such transfer. We only use entities that provide sufficient guarantees for implementing technical and organisational measures that ensure the protection of your rights. All Service Providers are bound by a written contract that sets out, among other things, the subject matter and duration of the processing, its nature and purpose, the categories of data subjects and the rights and obligations of the parties.
In addition, we may transfer or share your personal data with third parties (such as public authorities and government bodies) where necessary to (i) fulfil our obligations under the IKEA Family Terms and Conditions and (ii) comply with legal obligations.
Other users of the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace may also have access to some of your personal data (username, ads, location, ratings and reviews) that are necessary to interact with you on the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace. When you have sold a product, the buyer can see the collection address you have provided in your profile.
Automated decision-making
We use artificial intelligence (AI) to proactively identify and flag content, ads or user behaviour on the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace that may be in breach of applicable legislation and/or our moderation policy. However, to ensure fairness and accuracy, all content flagged by AI must be reviewed by a human moderator. This process guarantees that no decisions about removing content, issuing warnings to users or taking action on accounts are made solely in an automated way, thereby upholding our commitment to human oversight and compliance with regulations on automated decision-making.
International data transfers
We may transfer personal data abroad to companies within Ingka Group (where these companies share various activities and business processes with us) or to our Service Providers. This may require processing personal data in a country outside the EEA.
In such cases, the transfer of your personal data is lawful either because of an adequacy decision by the European Commission or because we have secured the transfer by entering into Standard Contractual Clauses (as approved by the European Commission) with the recipient. We will take measures to ensure that the transfer of your personal data outside the EEA benefits from a level of protection equivalent to that within the EEA and, where necessary, use other valid transfer tools or derogations in accordance with applicable data protection law to protect and secure your personal data.

Your rights
Under privacy legislation, including the General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”), the UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Swiss Data Protection Act in force since 1 September 2023, you have a number of rights in relation to the personal data we hold about you. The access, rights and controls may vary depending on your request, but in general you have the following rights, unless we communicate or justify otherwise.
Access: You have the right to obtain confirmation from us as to whether we process personal data about you and, if so, to access that personal data.
Rectification: You have the right to ask us to update and correct your personal data that is inaccurate, incomplete or out of date.
Erasure (“right to be forgotten”): You have the right to ask us to delete personal data that is no longer needed for the intended purpose.
Restriction: You have the right to ask us to temporarily or permanently restrict/stop the processing of your personal data.
Objection: You have the right to object at any time to the processing of your personal data where the legal basis for processing this personal data is our legitimate interest. In certain cases, granting your request would make it impossible for us to give you access to your account and to the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace.
Right to withdraw your consent: Where we process your personal data based on your consent, you have the right to withdraw your consent at any time. You can exercise this right by contacting us as described in section 2 above. Please note that withdrawing your consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before the withdrawal.
Data portability: You have the right to receive a readable copy of your personal data and, if you request it, to have your personal data transferred to another service provider.
Not to be subject to automated decision-making: You have the right not to be subject to a decision based solely on automated processing, including profiling, which produces legal effects concerning you or similarly significantly affects you.
Right to complain: You have the right to lodge a complaint about the use of your personal data with your local data protection authority. Before you do so, we would of course like to hear from you about the issue so that we have the opportunity to address it.
Lodging a complaint with your local data protection authority does not affect any other legal rights or remedies you may have under the law.
We may need to request specific information from you to help us confirm your identity and ensure your right to access your data (or to exercise any of your other rights). This is to make sure that your personal data is not disclosed to anyone who has no right to receive it. We may also contact you to ask you for further information in relation to your request so that we can respond more quickly.
We aim to respond to all legitimate requests within one calendar month. Occasionally it may take longer if your request is particularly complex or if you have made a number of requests. In that case, we will keep you informed.
How will I know if this Privacy Notice has changed?
As privacy legislation evolves and we further develop our processes and services, we may make changes to this Privacy Notice. Any future changes to our Privacy Notice will be updated online and made available there, with the latest update date shown as indicated below. If we make significant changes to the Privacy Notice, we will also inform you by email.
We recommend that you review this Privacy Notice regularly to check for any changes. If you continue to use the IKEA Second-Hand Marketplace after any changes or revisions to this Privacy Notice, this means that you have been duly informed of the revised terms for the processing of your personal data.
