Creating a safe haven: Understanding cots for your little one

Choosing the right cot for your baby is a crucial decision for any parent. A cot is the cornerstone of your baby's sleep environment, providing a secure and comfortable space for rest and growth.

What exactly is a cot?

A cot is a small bed designed specifically for infants and young children. It features high sides to prevent falls and is typically made of wood or metal. Cots are designed to provide a safe, comfortable sleeping environment for babies from birth until they're ready to transition to a bigger bed.

Are cots safe for newborns?

Yes, cots are considered one of the safest places for newborns to sleep when used correctly. Look for cots that meet current safety standards. When setting up your baby's cot, ensure mattress fits snugly with no gaps around the edges. Keep the cot free from toys, pillows, or loose bedding that could pose a suffocation risk.

What size is a cot bed?

A standard cot bed typically measures approximately 70 cm wide and 140 cm long. This size provides ample room for a growing child while still fitting comfortably in most nurseries. Some cot beds are designed with convertible features that allow them to be used as a toddler bed later on, extending their usability as the child grows.

When to lower the cot and take sides off?

Lowering the cot mattress should happen in stages as your baby grows. Start with the highest position for newborns, then lower it as your baby begins to sit up, typically around 6 months. The lowest position is safest when your baby can pull themselves up to stand, usually around 8-10 months. As for removing the sides, this usually happens when converting to a toddler bed, around 18 months to 3 years. Always follow the manual for your specific cot model to ensure safety.

At what age should children transition from a cot to a bed?

Most children make the switch from a cot to a bed between 18 months and 3 and a half years old. However, there's no one-size-fits-all answer, as every child is unique. It's generally recommended to wait until your child is at least 2 years old before making the transition. Signs that your child might be ready include outgrowing the cot or showing an interest in sleeping in a "big kid" bed.
