IKEA Greenwich

An art representation of the Greenwich store

IKEA is coming to Greenwich

At IKEA our vision is to create a better life for the many people. We do that by offering a wide range of well-designed, functional home furnishing products at prices so low that as many people as possible will be able to afford them.

We want to make IKEA accessible to many more people in the UK and Ireland and are excited to bring our home furnishing expertise to Greenwich!

The proposed IKEA store at the Millennium Way Retail Park was granted outline planning permission by the Royal Borough of Greenwich in December 2014, with matters of detail in relation to appearance, scale and landscaping reserved for subsequent approval. We will be shortly making an application for approval of these details.

IKEA took ownership of the store site in September 2016. We have been working on the detailed designs for the store and are now ready to share our proposals.

IKEA Greenwich will be our leading sustainable store in the UK and will include the full IKEA product range, inspirational room sets, a restaurant and a crèche. Designed with the local community, customer and environment in mind, this unique store will be set over two floors and will also feature:

   • A rooftop pavilion, biodiversity garden, multifunctional spaces and a restaurant as well as an inspirational home furnishing offer. Offering much more than a shopping experience.

   • Sustainable features, including upcycling solutions, solar panels, green walls, rain water harvesting, connection to the district heating, sustainable drainage and the use of onsite renewable technologies.

   • Community biodiversity garden alongside Bugsby's way.

IKEA are committed to Section 106 contributions payable to the Council for transport, air quality, education, training , enhancement of the nearby ecological park, traffic monitoring and road signage.

A Leading Sustainable store in the UK

As a business IKEA is dedicated to sustainability across all aspects of the business. The Greenwich store is designed and will be built to ensure energy and resource efficiency, including the use of solar panels, rainwater harvesting and energy saving and generating technology.

The store will meet a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ Certification Rating.

IKEA actively encourages its co-workers and customers to use public transport where possible and will invest in the local area to increase accessibility to the store.

IKEA Greenwich will be served by six bus routes and 42 buses an hour. In addition, the store will feature 75 cycle spaces and will offer 20 electric car-charging points.

Jobs

Bringing a new IKEA to Greenwich will create around 500 new jobs, offering both full and part-time positions in a wide variety of roles, including customer relations, sales, interior design and food services.

IKEA has a unique view of talent: all co-workers are regarded as talents and everyone’s contribution is important to the future growth and development of IKEA. We will work with partners in Greenwich – including the Council and Greenwich Local Labour & Business (GLAAB) to ensure we recruit locally as much as possible, like in our Reading store where 95% of our co-workers were recruited locally.

IKEA is also committed to paying a meaningful wage to its co-workers and is a principle partner of the Living Wage Foundation since April 2016. All IKEA co-workers are paid the Real Living Wage*.
