An IKEA for Greenwich Peninsula

An IKEA for Greenwich Peninsula

IKEA is bringing forward plans to submit an application for outline planning permission to the Royal Borough of Greenwich for the redevelopment of the site on Bugsby’s Way which is currently occupied by the Sainsbury’s foodstore and the former Comet store. Sainsbury’s has already announced plans to relocate this store to a nearby site at Gallions Road.

Our plans would:

• Deliver IKEA’s most accessible store in the UK for customers visiting by public transport. The site is close to underground and rail links and is also served by six bus routes offering up to 42 buses in each direction per hour. Car-borne IKEA customers will be able to use the existing 1,000-vehicle parking spaces on the site which would be shared – as is the current situation at Sainsbury’s – with B&Q and Odeon customers.

• Provide a significant new sustainable development on Greenwich Peninsula. Sustainable development is at the heart of our business. The proposed store on Greenwich Peninsula would be constructed using materials and methods which help to minimise its carbon footprint and will provide a significant proportion of its energy needs from on-site sources.

• Create up to 400 job opportunities for local people as well as generating an additional 200 jobs during the construction phase. The store would offer a further 80 jobs to service contractors, including security, facilities management and cleaning services. We will work closely with the local Jobcentre Plus as well as with other local employment-related initiatives – to explore opportunities for those who are long-term unemployed in the area.

Steve Pettyfer, Property Manager, IKEA UK said, “Having engaged with members of the local community and listened to their feedback, we are pleased there is good support for an IKEA store and the 400 job opportunities for local people. We have now submitted an outline planning application to the Royal Borough of Greenwich seeking permission for the redevelopment of the site on Bugsby’s Way. We will continue to work with the local community as we develop our plans.”
