How to choose kitchen cabinets and cabinet interiors

Feeling overwhelmed by all the choices when planning your new kitchen or renovating the old? Don’t worry – picking the right cabinets and interiors can be simpler than it seems. This is a handy guide to get you going, minus the guesswork.

Combine kitchen cabinets to optimize your space

Cabinets from our flexible SEKTION kitchen system come in a variety of heights, widths and depths so that you can work around any architectural challenges and maximize kitchen storage. There are four main types that you can mix to get a kitchen that meets your needs – base cabinets, cabinets for built-in appliances, high cabinets and wall cabinets, all with their own benefits.

Base cabinets – your kitchen’s true workhorses

Base cabinets are the heroes of your kitchen, as they form the foundation for the countertop and can hold the cooktop, oven and sink. They offer storage for heavier and larger kitchen items, such as pots and pans, plates and bowls, cleaning supplies and waste sorting. Base cabinets can also be used to create a customized kitchen island with extra storage. Unless you have a parallel kitchen or only one wall to work with, you’ll want at least one base corner cabinet to use your space efficiently – a carousel or pull-out tray inside makes it more accessible.

There are many options to maximize the insides, from fixed shelves to wire baskets and drawers. In general, drawers are a great choice. Mix deep ones with at least one shallow, or hidden drawer, which is ideal for cutlery and utensils. Our smooth-running MAXIMERA drawers, available in different sizes, pull out all the way for a great overview and easy access. They close slowly and quietly thanks to the built-in dampers.

Wall cabinets – add storage and visual interest

Wall cabinets, with different heights, widths and depths, make the most of your kitchen’s vertical space. Primarily used for storing items that you want close at hand, they are ideal for holding serving dishes, glasses, and other smaller kitchen essentials. They most commonly have shelves, either solid or made of glass.

Wall cabinets add visual appeal and enhance the style of your kitchen. Choose vertical or horizontal doors, corner cabinets, or wall cabinets with drawers. You can put your finest dinnerware on display behind glass doors with integrated LED lighting – and use the undersides to set up effective task lighting in your cooking area. Another great tip is to make sure that the height of your wall cabinets align with the top of your high cabinets, for a visually clean top line.

High cabinets – take your storage to the ceiling

Are you looking for a pantry for your food items or a special place for your cleaning supplies? High cabinets are a fantastic way to save floor space while giving your kitchen a streamlined look. They’re especially handy in smaller kitchens where it can be a bit tricky to create enough storage.

High cabinets come in a variety of heights, widths, and depths, so they can fit into almost any nook and cranny. Plus, you can attach a front to the drawers to create a pull-out pantry, or customize them with adjustable shelves, drawers, and pull-out organizers, making it easy to reach what you need!

Cabinets for built-in appliances – for a sleek look

Integrated kitchen appliances are becoming increasingly popular in modern homes, and for good reason! By hiding them away in your kitchen cabinets, you can achieve a smooth and uniform look throughout your space.

Our cabinets for built-in appliances are specially designed for our range. We have cabinets for sinks which are reinforced to carry the weight and have cutouts for piping, high cabinets perfect for fridges and freezers, and cabinets designed to house your oven and/or microwave oven. All cabinets for built-in appliances are ventilated and many of them are reinforced so that they can bear the weight of heavy built-in appliances.

If your space allows it, you can add a top cabinet for extra storage above your fridge or freezer. And for a truly coordinated appearance, you can attach the same style kitchen front to one of our integrated dishwashers!
