Perfect addition to the kitchenSVITLANAI love this kitchen island. It's very useful and stylish. Met my needs.5
Good, stable but difficult to assemble.ERICA J.While a fine and stable piece for the kitchen, the pre-drilled starter holes were awful. This could not be assembled without power tools. The holes were nearly too small to hold the screws and the wood too hard to hand tighten. The quality of the metal in the screws is equally awful, constantly stripping out. If you can run your power drill or screwdriver and get each assembled/tightened correctly the on the first try, you have a chance of putting it together in good order. If not, you'll need replacement screws or deal with unstable shelving.3
Excellent Kitchen AdditionKimberlyIn the desire to create more countertop space, we searched for kitchen furniture to house some appliances, a toaster oven and pressure cooker. I also knew in the future I would replace our hood microwave with a small stand alone one, and it would likely live on the cart/island thing. A search through Ikea's website later and my choice falls on the Tornviken island. It checks off all the boxes we had: small/medium footprint, easy to access shelves with one shelf open in the back for cord management (i.e. Future Microwave spot), (bonus) soft close drawer, and an easy design that could fit in with our kitchen. The color of it is more of a cream rather than bright white, so it didn't exactly match the large Stenstorp island that we have in the same space. We could easily paint it if we wanted though. The wood veneer top is nice, and will just need an oiling here and there. I like that I can butter bread right there as soon as it comes out of the oven, or quickly slice open a bagel prior to toasting without making more dirty dishes. Assembly took me a couple hours and I only got one part backwards just once! It looks quite nice against the wall in the kitchen nook. We have tall ceilings and I can see us adding a shelf or two above the island to add more utility to this space. Overall, we're pretty happy with this piece.5
Perfect fitRENEEWe have a small galley kitchen with one end that a table could fit in but that we use for a shoe bench and some extra storage. Thr Tornviken cabinet is a perfect fit under the window and provides great storage and easy access for my nice mixing bowls and cutting boards. We love the combination of white sides and wood top!5
It’s a good furnitureGato 21I’m so happy to bay this product5

Good cabinet well madeMrOakThis is a good well made cabinet. We bought the floor model so I did not have to put it together. The only problem we have is not really with the cabinet but the wood highlights do not match our other white and wood breakfast table that we bought at Ikea. So that's not a problem with the cabinet. My wife really likes this cabinet which we use to hold our microwave (it's on the top). Later (likely next year) we will do a partial remodel of our kitchen and the microwave will be replaced with an over the range microwave. We also need to install a pull out/tilt out trash can cabinet. At that point there will be no space for this cabinet so it will be repurposed some where else in the condo (or donated/sold). The good news it is an attractive and useful general purpose cabinet that will likely still serve us. Later there is a question about value, we got this on store disposal of display items so the price we paid was way lower that normal. Thus the value for money question is not valid for our situation.4
KikisocuteThis is a project for two people to put together, also the directions for assembly are written a bit incorrectly. But with that said, once finished it is beautiful! The strong wood and aesthetic are perfect in the kitchen or anywhere! I’m very happy with my purchase, and expect this piece to last a long time!5
Quality PurchasechurchladySturdy. Wanted to get coffee maker, toaster and tea maker off the counter. Is great with deep shelves. Fits perfect in a smaller kitchen without taking up a ton of room. Soft close drawer.4
Perfect size, looks nice, functionalLinkbeakI bought this for my new house where the kitchen had been remodeled to look good but it had lost a lot of function in the process. I love to bake so my KitchenAid and Cuisinart sit up top with all their accessories on the shelves below. The drawer houses my scale and measuring cups. It looks more polished than a lot of IKEA pieces and functions well.5
Handy kitchen addition1andoneThis is very sturdy and is a handy addition fitting nicely at the end of our island for additional storage or food prep area. Pay careful attention to instructions when assembling the drawer. The face can go on upside down leaving a gap at the top. Once on, impossible to get off without damage. Not clearly marked on the instructions.4
Great but Wish Width was BetterThe Pear FarmI bought this for added counter space to pair with the larger Tornviken island I have. They are abutting, with the 28 width of the one adjacent to the 30 edge of the other. I wish Ikea had thought to make this island 2 wider for better pairing. Otherwise, it is a good looking island and solid.5
Heavy and solid, but...ShwookiePerfect storage for my needs, attractive piece but building it was a challenge. The front shelf panel that sits horizontally under the shelf was impossible to install so I had to eliminate it. So far the shelf is holding.4

Better worktops by using wood smartly

Wood is a precious natural resource. Even though it’s a renewable material it needs to be handled responsibly. One way to do it, is to use the wood more efficiently. That’s what we do with our kitchen worktops in thick wood veneer.

“At IKEA we have a tradition of trying to utilize the materials we have in the best possible way,” says Johnny Rietz, who’s been involved in developing the kitchen worktops in thick veneer. The work started in 2008 when IKEA founder, Ingvar Kamprad, visited one of our suppliers and asked a simple question that took some time to answer: ‘How can we make this product using fewer trees?’

Less is more

“After some trials and errors, we came up with the solution. A core of particleboard and a layer of solid wood on the outside – or thick veneer,” says Johnny. “It’s a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern manufacturing methods. Paper-thin veneer has been used in fine, decorative furniture making for centuries, but for our worktops we’re using a much thicker layer of wood.” The thick veneer makes the surface hardwearing, and it saves raw material – a lot of it. From the same amount of wood needed to make one solid worktop, it’s possible to produce five thick veneer worktops.

No wood is wasted

Another advantage with this production technique is that you can use the whole tree; the stem as surface, and scrap bits – curvy, bent branches and small twigs – for the particleboard on the inside. The end result is a worktop that is every bit as genuine as solid wood, only more stable and more resistant to humidity. “Sometimes a small, harmless question can make a big difference. That’s exactly what happened with our kitchen worktops. It started as a challenge to use resources wiser, and proved to have positive effects not only for the environment, but also the quality. I think it’s great when that happens!” says Johnny.
