Beautiful kitchen islandVeraIt’s beautiful, very reasonable price, easy assembly 5
We're liking itWilliamIt really helps in the kitchen 4
Amazing Island!AngieThe 2 shelves in the island provide wonderful storage and we love the knee space for barstools. We had a stone company put a matching quartz top on so it looks very custom! Island is very sturdy and the creamy / antique white is a great color! LOVE this island!!!5
Attractive, sturdy, practicalMarkI have a large microwave oven (19 inches deep and 24 inches wide), and unfortunately most microwave carts aren't deep enough. This kitchen island (I got the one which is 20.5 inches deep, 28.5 inches wide, and 35.5 inches tall) was the perfect size, plus it's sturdy, and looks nice. It wasn't hard to assemble but it does take some time, and if you don't pay close attention, it's easy to install a shelf or support upside down. It weighs about 92 pounds, which is a bit heavy, but similar products made from real wood are about 73 pounds, so the difference isn't huge. The metal "feet" can be turned to adjust the height of each leg in case of uneven floors. I wish the drawer was a tad deeper. The half-height back panel is rather thick and heavy -- wish they would have used real wood for that piece and made it less thick to cut down on weight; particle board is heavy even at moderate thickness. The soft-close feature on the drawer was a pleasant surprise.5
Kitchen Island JordanThe island was very easy to assemble. The quality is great. It's a wonderful size for our kitchen. I'm very happy with the height and the amount of additional storage it provides. 5
Kitchen IslandMylieMy dad lives in a small apartment with not enough kitchen space. This piece is sturdy and is the perfect addition to bring a little organization to his space. He uses it to prep his meals because the rest of his counter tops are cluttered with appliances.5
Urgly TabletopYingThe tabletop was expected to feature lovely wood knots, but the one I received is marred by tiny black blemishes that resemble insect damage. The customer service team appears to lack adequate training, as their responses are unrelated to my inquiries, and they disconnect from the chat when further questions are posed.1
Very HandyToniaI love this island. It fits a 10X10 kitchen perfectly. I love the shelving. Although I do wish the shelving was as adjustable and that it had cabinet doors. Other than that, its very solid and fulfills our needs. We hold appliances, plates, cutlery, cereal/oatmeal, and bread all comfortably inside. I would purchase again but Im sure this will last many years. I love how heavy it is. I did have to purchase my own rubber feet to keep it from sliding. $2 fix. The ones that come with it are too smooth.5
Solid islandCliffordThis island is very heavy. It’s a complicated assembly, so I suggest two or three people. I’m a 67 year old man with handyman experience, and it took me a few hours. It comes in three boxes. Having a helper, or two will help with maneuvering the assembly and lining up the components. In the end it’s beautiful. My wife loves it! And it’s weight gives it solidity.4
Craft tabketLindaUsed this table for my sewing items. Love the side storage.5
Great island!Heidi M.Exactly what we needed for extra storage and counter space in a small kitchen!5
Great findValeria R.I was originally looking for a dinning set in a mid-century modern style but then I saw this piece. It’s beautiful, functional and the perfect size for the space.5
Perfect crafting tableSherryWe purchased two of these and put them into a row - one facing one direction, and one facing the other - two chairs can easily fit, more can in a pinch. Storage is built it!5
Great Kitchen IslandAleneWell made and such great quality. Love it!!5
nice cute pieceBopta L.I purchased this to go along with the other larger Tornviken piece, and it compliments it very well, no matter how you place it. Easy to assemble and sturdy.5
nice pieceBopta L.Nice looking, sturdy!5
Love this IslandChloeGreat size and functionality. Sturdy and good looking. The countertop cleans off beautifully and we just love it! So glad I didn't buy the one I wanted for $3500 because this is just perfect!5
Great pieceDaniel G.Very happy with this in our kitchen. Also get compliments from family.5
AmazingKristinaI got this to replace a really awful wayfair island, and ikea definitely has a system down for assembly. It took me and my mom less than 2hrs to assemble, and was super easy. It feels like really good quality, solid wood instead of composite wood. There's so much storage and the seating space is quite spacious (can fit 2 counter height stools very well, would not fit 3). It is quite pricy, but for the solid wood and quality, I can see where the price comes from. I'd definitely recommend this and would buy it again.5
Great kitchen islandKevinSolid construction; looks great; pretty heavy, so more difficult to assemble alone5

Better worktops by using wood smartly

Wood is a precious natural resource. Even though it’s a renewable material it needs to be handled responsibly. One way to do it, is to use the wood more efficiently. That’s what we do with our kitchen worktops in thick wood veneer.

“At IKEA we have a tradition of trying to utilize the materials we have in the best possible way,” says Johnny Rietz, who’s been involved in developing the kitchen worktops in thick veneer. The work started in 2008 when IKEA founder, Ingvar Kamprad, visited one of our suppliers and asked a simple question that took some time to answer: ‘How can we make this product using fewer trees?’

Less is more

“After some trials and errors, we came up with the solution. A core of particleboard and a layer of solid wood on the outside – or thick veneer,” says Johnny. “It’s a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern manufacturing methods. Paper-thin veneer has been used in fine, decorative furniture making for centuries, but for our worktops we’re using a much thicker layer of wood.” The thick veneer makes the surface hardwearing, and it saves raw material – a lot of it. From the same amount of wood needed to make one solid worktop, it’s possible to produce five thick veneer worktops.

No wood is wasted

Another advantage with this production technique is that you can use the whole tree; the stem as surface, and scrap bits – curvy, bent branches and small twigs – for the particleboard on the inside. The end result is a worktop that is every bit as genuine as solid wood, only more stable and more resistant to humidity. “Sometimes a small, harmless question can make a big difference. That’s exactly what happened with our kitchen worktops. It started as a challenge to use resources wiser, and proved to have positive effects not only for the environment, but also the quality. I think it’s great when that happens!” says Johnny.

Material

What is veneer?

A veneer is a thin wooden sheet attached to things like particleboard to add a durable surface and a natural wood look – so we enjoy the many benefits of wood without using solid wood. The most common veneer types are birch, ash, oak, and beech, and we’ve made a special UV lacquer that helps preserve the wood's natural structure. A benefit with a slightly thicker veneer is how you can repair and sand the surface if it’s damaged to give furniture a longer and more beautiful life.
