Product details

Skilled craftspeople have woven the product by hand, so each one is one of a kind.

Rattan is a natural material which ages beautifully and develops its own unique character over time.

The material brings a piece of nature into your home and spreads a calm, warm feeling.

You can buy several headboards and place them together to create a larger headboard.

No need to worry about marks on the wall, since the back of the headboard has a small bumper made of jute to prevent scratches.

The headboard is free-standing, so you don´t need to fix it to the wall.

The legs of the headboard are designed to fit walls both with and without a skirting board.

Problem Solved JoNeeded a lightweight headboard to place over a window when the twin trundle in my Florida guest room was in use. Perfect!5
Guest room makeoverMarianneRecently made over our guest room and used the Tolkning headboard to complete the look. It did require our handyman to lift it higher on the wall but I think it looks great and it catches my eye every time I pass the room. 5
nice and simple Ismarinice and simple however over months of used is noisy and cheap. 3
Full of splinters! Horrible quality! AnonymousHuge disappointment! This headboard is just made of rough, woven strips of splintery wood. And I mean SHARP splinters! Who on earth would want that next to their head and pillow at night?? Seriously bad quality. Worst IKEA purchase I have ever made. No way this could be acceptable. How did it pass quality control? I will immediately be returning the ones I bought. IKEA, you need to discontinue this product and recall it ASAP. 1
Beautiful, but splinters a possibilityPriscillaI really wanted to buy a couple of these for our king size bed - they didn’t have any on display at IKEA but luckily I opened a box before purchasing. This is not a true rattan with smooth thin twigs - it’s more like very thin pieces of wood woven together, and there were plenty of rough edges. This would be great in a home with bigger kids, but I didn’t feel like it would work for us with smaller kids - it was too rough. So pretty though! 4
Super Cute!ElyseNeeded to update my 4 year old to a "big girl bed" and after considering many pricier options, I'm so glad we picked this! We wanted something that felt cozy like a daybed, but the windows of her room constricted us. I do wish there were an easy way to connect them together or to a bed, we just used zipties which worked very well. For the price and solution, would recommend again! I wish I could submit a photo, it could help someone else with a similar situation. 5
Love this headboard! MarciaSuper attractive headboard at a very reasonable price. Super attractive headboard at a very reasonable price. Sturdy, easy to install, and just fits my bed. Looks great! 5
Need zip tie!LaurenNo where in the description does this state free standing. I had to zip tie it in a bunch of places to the bed frame. I couldn’t jam the bed to the wall to hold it up because the half of the bed is under a window and the headboard hits the window sill. Don’t buy unless you have an empty wall!1
Great headboardLisaI purchased two of these twin size headboards for my queen size bed. I have a platform bed so this works great as a headboard. I will probably get a 2x4 to place behind the bed , place the headboard on top to raise it 2 more inches. Unless ikea has longer legs i can purchase. I wish I could submit a picture cuz it looks cute.5
Great buy.Anonymous reviewerThe headboards look great together as a king and separately as twins in my guest room. The price was certainly a factor is selecting these but they are sturdy and not rough to the touch.5
pretty but flaw in designChelseaI purchased the headboard and frame it was shown with- the frame was in stock so we got it and ordered headboard online- I think the frame is sturdy and was really easy to put together which was nice. The headboard I read nothing about being free standing so when I put the frame together first I was confused how anything would attach to it and when I got the headboards I understood 😂 I think I like it. I may regret that in a few months but for now strange design but fine for the money I think. I just wish they were higher off the ground but it’s ok. I’m sure my kids will find some way to mess it up😂3
Already chippingRachelWe’ve had this headboard less than a month in our daughters room in which she doesn’t even sleep (we’re working on it). The metal parts of the frame not covered in rattan and just painted tan are already chipping. We also had to zip tie it to the frame so it stopped sliding all around1
“free-standing” = falseRafaellaI want to love this headboard however there is a serious flaw in the design. The description states “free-standing headboard” which is far from true. It would be such an easy fix for IKEA too. If you are okay with getting creative or leaning it on the wall, this product really is pretty and a great size for the price.4
It's simple , best forNorbertIt's simple , best for a full or twin3
I wish there was anAnonymous reviewerI wish there was an option for it not to be free standing. I had to fab it up to be high enough for my tall bed4

TOLKNING Headboard, handmade rattan

Invite nature into your home

When we developed TOLKNING, we worked with experienced artisans. The result is a decorative and multi-functional series of natural fiber products that carry warmth, a unique expression, and lots of character.

Simi Gauba and Kristin Pfannenschmidt are two of our product developers who are based in Vietnam and work a lot with natural fibers. “When we created TOLKNING, we got help from skilled artisans who know the strengths and weaknesses of the material,” says Simi. “Without them, we wouldn’t be able to offer these products to our customers.”

Form and function hand in hand

When each natural fiber is treated right, it can be transformed into almost anything. “We can create products that are as beautiful as they are functional. It’s impossible to manufacture two that look exactly the same, since every natural fiber shifts in color and texture. On the other hand, customers get something unique with lots of character,” says Kristin.

Cooperation between man and nature

Simi says that working with natural fibers can be challenging, but that is also a part of the charm. “The TOLKNING series reflects a heritage that is worth preserving – man and nature together and skills passed on from generation to generation. I think that’s one of the reasons why these kinds of products are so loved. They have a soul and warmth that many people like – perfect if you want to add genuine materials and natural beauty to your home.”

Material

What is rattan?

Rattan is a strong yet lightweight and flexible material made from the rattan plant’s stem. It can be used both whole and split into thinner materials that are braided into things like furniture and baskets. Rattan belongs to the palm family and climbs along trees, though no trees are required to be felled when the rattan cane is harvested. Since it is a natural material and the products are often handmade by skilled craftspeople, each object gets a completely unique look.

Designer thoughts

Designer thoughts

“My idea with the TOLKNING series was to create sustainable products made from natural fibers that could be used in different ways and in several places throughout the home. I started with my Scandinavian heritage and, in combination with the knowhow and professional skills of craftspeople, the unique products took shape – made by people and for people. I hope they will be useful, bring you joy and make you feel proud about making a conscious choice."
