cute but hate itChristinaI didn't check before ordering it, but the lid is not on a hinge and you have to lift off. It is big and an absolutely pain to store things you need to access often like gloves/hats/dog leashes. Maybe ok in a bedroom to store things not needed on a daily basis. 3
Weak wickerEricI use this product to sit on while putting on shoes, and I am a real lightweight: 136 lbs. The front edge of the lid wicker has broken and separated from the support. Beware. Should be sturdier. Cannot recommend.1

Pretty but lid is a bit uneven and not sturdy enoughAnnaVery pretty but not as functional as I had hoped. No hinges as others have mentioned, but also the lid feels like its not tolerating being sat on. I'm 120lbs and sat on the middler of it it gently and it felt like it bowed a little under my weight. I later noticed that the lid is a bit uneven, there's a gap on one side when its closed on the other. I'm not sure if this came from me sitting on it or if it was there from the start but it is definitely annoying. So it could do with being reinforced there if they recommend you use it for seating. 3

Perfect decorative storage!HollyI was in desperate need of some storage for seasonal throw blankets and pillows. This bench works wonders! It’s beautiful, relatively simple to assemble, and very lightweight which makes it easy to move around for extra seating. I paid $149.00 (Fall 2023) and I feel that is a pretty fair price. I will note that over time, if the bench gets more use, it may start to sag in the middle as there is no support on the lid or in the box to prevent this. But so far it’s been very sturdy, and perfectly fine for occasional seating.5

Great but a few changesCaseyI love it visually, i‘m using it as a dining bench and loved the idea of extra storage for seating. Its strong enough to sit two people on top but not two heavy people lol. It could use some extra reinforcement through the middle. And i would prefer the lid be attached with hinges of some kind. But it looks beautiful and works great super easy to put together great price.5

Story

Invite nature into your home

When we developed TOLKNING, we worked with experienced artisans. The result is a decorative and multi-functional series of natural fiber products that carry warmth, a unique expression, and lots of character.

Simi Gauba and Kristin Pfannenschmidt are two of our product developers who are based in Vietnam and work a lot with natural fibers. “When we created TOLKNING, we got help from skilled artisans who know the strengths and weaknesses of the material,” says Simi. “Without them, we wouldn’t be able to offer these products to our customers.”

Form and function hand in hand

When each natural fiber is treated right, it can be transformed into almost anything. “We can create products that are as beautiful as they are functional. It’s impossible to manufacture two that look exactly the same, since every natural fiber shifts in color and texture. On the other hand, customers get something unique with lots of character,” says Kristin.

Cooperation between man and nature

Simi says that working with natural fibers can be challenging, but that is also a part of the charm. “The TOLKNING series reflects a heritage that is worth preserving – man and nature together and skills passed on from generation to generation. I think that’s one of the reasons why these kinds of products are so loved. They have a soul and warmth that many people like – perfect if you want to add genuine materials and natural beauty to your home.”

Material

What is rattan?

Rattan is a strong yet lightweight and flexible material made from the rattan plant’s stem. It can be used both whole and split into thinner materials that are braided into things like furniture and baskets. Rattan belongs to the palm family and climbs along trees, though no trees are required to be felled when the rattan cane is harvested. Since it is a natural material and the products are often handmade by skilled craftspeople, each object gets a completely unique look.

“My idea with the TOLKNING series was to create sustainable products made from natural fibers that could be used in different ways and in several places throughout the home. I started with my Scandinavian heritage and, in combination with the knowhow and professional skills of craftspeople, the unique products took shape – made by people and for people. I hope they will be useful, bring you joy and make you feel proud about making a conscious choice."
